that shyt is so unreal
Floyd Mayweather is a very skilled fighter yes. But I'm tired of the fans touting this same excuse over and over acting like breh is a fine wine only true boxing fans will enjoy.
Hit and not be hit.
Of course that's the premise. And contrary to what y'all might say, that is something casuals as well as purists enjoy. From the likes of Cassius Clay, to Mike Tyson to Pernell Whittaker, to Roy Jones and all the other greats, rose to prominence because of their great defensive skills. How they so easily slipped and ducked their way through opponent punches.
It's well documented. People love seeing this displayed.
That's not the issue. That's not why people are bored with him.
Nor do we ask him to get into a slugfest like your average Mexican fighter.
It's cause he doesn't engage. He damn near jogs around the ring for 12 rounds then expects us to call him the Greatest of All Time. And that is what separates him from the actual greats, they actually engaged.
Not gunna happen.
Floyd rarely engages. It's one thing do not get hit actually hunting your opponent. (That's what the true greats actually did). But it's another thing to not get hit cause you're backing away skiddish most of the fight. To the point u got cats like canelo throwing down their hands like 'fight me'.
Floyd doesn't engage.
He treats it like a job he goes to and punches his clock to get paid. Not like a fighter passionate for the sport, who leaves everything in the ring.
This exaggerates his defensive prowess.
I respect it from a Money May point of view, sure. But not from a boxing point of view.
Bottom line. Floyd's greatness looks far better on paper than it does in the ring.
Again. Floyd's greatness looks far better on paper than it does in the ring.
That is why he can never be the Greatest of All Time
Floyd used to engage and trade shots in fights all the time at 130 and 135
a great pure boxer will always find a way to deal with a pressure fighterone person can engage on their own. guys like hatton, ruslan, prime zab, and cotto all can force even elite fighters to engage by cutting off the ring or having great speed. as great as floyd is, he has been forced to fight intense fights by guys who know how to pressure.
floyd is the biggest draw in the sport, so pointing to his style of fighting as an indictment for why people feel some type of way about him is kind of a moot point. people who hate floyd are never pleased with fights where he was pressured and still prevailed. even when the dude was seen as a good fighter they all become shot, overrated, or bum status in the eyes of certain fans after floyd fights them. they buy tickets and PPVs because they hate him and want to see somebody beat him. it's like a bad breakup with a girl, there were some actual reasons for the relationship to end, but that was long forgotten. now all that exists is emotional rage every time you see her and a perpetual interest in seeing all future relationships with your ex fail.
floyd started out trying to be a fan favorite, but through a combination of his attitude and fighting style, that never materialized. instead of becoming an obscure but respected all time great like rigo will most likely end up being, he decided to turn heel and let his most negative personality traits take center stage. to top it all off, floyd has something your favorite fighter does not have: a zero in the loss column so that really bothers people since it makes it harder to argue that their favorite fighter is still better than him. a lot of people understand this, but even more do not, so they continue spending money on a fighter they hate without knowing that floyd is actually one of their favorite fighters ever because when he fights guys that are widely seen as credible threats pre-match (oscar, hatton, mosley, cotto, canelo) he gives them the opportunity to see him get his ass beat. he is the villain their favorite movie needed all along.
and i am not saying this applies to everyone, some people just like different styles of fighter, such reasonable people can acknowledge the greatness of floyd while not being a fan of his style. my comments really just apply to the majority of most vocal boxing fans who tend to be fans of pacman or tend to belong to the cac persuasion who are always trying to find some way to actually discount him and his place in boxing history.
people that say he runs must listen to espn talk boxing or dont watch....his last fight with canelo, he walked canelo down and had him fighting off his back fight most of the time...the times that he felt like he had to use movement, he used it..floyd just doesnt waste his punches so he only throws when he is sure it will connect..a wasted punch is wasted energy...those who "engage" floyd try that shxt and end up stopp punching their damnself cause they know every time they punch they miss, they also get hit with a crisp overhand right or jab...You don't know what your talking about, floyd's opponents punch about dwindles the longer the fight goes down look at ones, they're the ones who don't want to engage out of fear of getting head, if they went after him like that they would get stopped more than likely
People also says Floyd run but can give no example, post a fight of Floyd running from an opponent
