The chances of that happening are very low, the process is long and you are competing against so many. Sofia could have just paid off some family to take her in. But the niece is already cutting herself and going to mentally damage herself, pretty much the same faith as Sofia but on a different scale.

she didn't just lose her parents, she lost her entire family and aunt Sofia pulled up and basically told her she's happy they're all dead.

she doesn't share any of the blame of that damage, she's just a child reacting to it.
