Acting is great on the show, but last three episodes or so the writing is rushed if not just plain sub par at times.
The writing has been mid for its entirety. It's probably only glaringly noticeable over the last few episodes because you're starting to realize it's going around in circles with nothing new to say.
Whatever intrigue there was with Sofia's character has been completely b*stardized by the oversaturation of Dr. Rush., which leaves little room for any nuance or mystery for us to work out on our own, which was what made her story compelling in the first place (don't get me started on her teaming up with Sal after the lengths the narrative went to make her a figure of abadonment, detachment and solus).
The buildup (if you can even call it that ) and the exchange between Os and Sal encapsulated all that's wrong with this show -
We know, narratively, that Os' life isn't going to be in any grave danger, so at the very least we should be getting some heightened sense of tension or violence to convince us otherwise. Instead what we get is some extras as goons, who appear as they've been picked off the street, randomly, who aren't in any way menacing, commanding or distinctive, which further emphasizes just how insipid and benign Sal is, whose entire existence is a plot device and not as a meaningful character.
The scene flatlines, completely, when Os is being held over a barell of a gun and he regurgitates the same ole pitch that we've seen in every instance he tries to talk his way out of some shyt - "
Listen Sal, I can give you what you want, this whole thing is yours now, you can start a whole new empire. What are you going to share with Carmine's daughter, after all the Falcones took from you."
Like, nxgga, we heard all this shyt before, in every other episode.
Then the opposing goons get into it, and all they can muster from what we see on screen is pushing and shoving, interluding to an old ass man and a cripple tussling, throwing lifeless punches on some choreographed shyt that would've been fit for Adam West's
Batman from the 1960s; the only thing missing was the superimposed text and sounds effects of
KAPOW!, BAM!, KRUNCH!
Culminating in said old ass man having a heart attack, falling to the floor and Os bridged over him saying
"I beat you Sal, I beat you, I win!" as if they were in the playground and Os had just took his remaining marbles.
If this show had no connection to any DC/comicbook lore, and stood on its own as a crime action-drama, the obviousness of how hilariously bad it is would be more acknowledged. I don't know if that speaks to how weak comicbook adaptions have been, where this show doesn't have high to jump to clear the bar, or if cats are that enamoured by superhero shyt that they convince themselves they can't smell shyt.
It is truly perplexing how Marvel and DC material has paralysed all TV/film sensibilities over the last two decades. Word to Martin Scorsese.
