I typically buy a new PC every 2 years.
Because you have to, or because you want to?
I'm thinking in terms of reliability.
Context: My last iMac lasted 7 very strong years. It worked like the day I bought up until it died on me last year out of no where. It didn't skip a beat regardless what I threw at it. Now I never pushed it as far as games, but I ran video editing software, huge recording sessions with tons of plug ins, and never had a single performance issue.

@Ciggavelli @daze23 @2gunsup or anyone else in here. Who has experience with external enclosures? I don't want raid, just solid enclosures that can house 4 hard drives minimum. It looks like mediasonic might be my best bet. I thought about a NAS, but that's too pricey for drives that just need to scan data continuously 24x7.

And I need about fifteen 4 bay enclosures or eight 8 bay models will also work. shyt is getting pricey and its wild to me that external enclosures that can hold 4-8 drives are so damn expensive :damn:

edit: USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 will work if y'all have any suggestions.

How long do your PC's usually last?
Do you find yourself pretty much gutting your PC every 3 - 5 years?
depends what you wanna do. to keep up with 'ultra' gaming you'll have to upgrade your gpu every couple years. cpu's usually have legs, especially if you overclock

it's just one of those things where there's always gonna be something new to tempt you

If all you are doing is scanning data then you need to make it as cheap as possible...which means you need to just buy a large tower and a mother board with a as many sata ports as possible... fill it up with hard drives and go uber cheap on everything else.

Something like an Full Tower Fractal F5 and a motherboard like a Asus Z370. Plenty of space and 6 Sata ports.

Now if you REALLY need "fifteen 4 bay enclosures" then you need just go ahead and get you a server type nas system. You not going to find anything close to that on the commercial market....

Forget hard drives...how much SPACE do you really need?
