The simplest and most logical theory is that Rylance, a respected stage actor in his first really high profile role, who gave a rivetingly odd performance that utterly stood out against the usual shouting-for-an-Oscar theatrics, was the leading candidate from day 1 and the Stallone boomlet was a figment of the Oscar press's imagination.
