The S and X have built in surge protectors, so if you use an external one your system might not turn on. At least according to this:

Reddit says MSoft took down the article telling people not to use a surge since this was posted yesterday....
For the record I've got all 3 Xbox's (One, One S & One X) and I've always used a surge protector and never had no issues
I had to get an external for all my games. The X1X is the system of choice. Don’t get me wrong, it’s PC gaming for me most of the time. However, when there are Console exclusives, I’m going to always buy the X1X version. shyt looks a lot nicer than I though (and this comes from a pc snob with top of the line everything)

i got mine plugged into an outlet maybe that's why idk i found out the audio issue tho it's when i put my tv in 4k i got one of the early 4k models from 2 years ago so it's not fully capable with the 1X so that's why my audio was cuttin out ever since i put it back to 1080p no problems i had the same problems with my S had to change the hdmi cable also

the surge protector fukked mine up a few times when the power shut off and back on
it destroyed the power brick ... and limited the amount of power I was getting. Its like it froze and confused my xbox on how much power it was holding after the electricity came back to it. Took awhile to fix it too, and I've went through 2 power supplies because of it. One power supply was dumb cheap though and burnt out

I don't have a single wall plug just for a console. I've been slow on using the console but it's gonna have to go in a surge protector.

You honestly should be fine. I still have my shyt in a surge protector. I remember I had to plug it in the wall to get full power when it shyt the bed though. Its like the voltage from the wall reset everything or something.
