i think one of yall explained why the 800 is run in a pack - something to do with how crazy the stagger would have to be, but why cant they start at the top of the straightaway and just run two laps in their own lanes? i just get irked by this race run in a pack given there's not much margin to recover from a stumble, being clipped, etc
The starting points are not adjusted for distance for the entire race, only up to the point where they are permitted to converge. In the 800m, that's the first bend. When runners cross the "break line" after the first bend they have all run equal distances and then they leave their lanes.
A waterfall start is used in distance races (1500m and over). You can cut in immediately.
