Finally caught this weeks episode
Writing, acting and setting aside, this show might have the best production values I've ever seen
The score is amazing
The camera work is brilliant
From the shot of Thack slowly entering Lucy's room (the lighting
) to the end of the episode blew my mind how well done it was. Those familiar with Utopia know about the praise it gets for its visuals, but The Knick is better to me because instead of depending on striking colors they get amazing results using natural lighting and inventive camera angles.
The only slight issue I have is how quickly it seems Thackery had a 180 on his treatment of Algernon. He was nearly as severe towards his as Everett was and flipped in the span of one season pretty much. I get that we're supposed to realize that he was never really that racist but merely didn't want to deal with the distraction, but I think it would have worked better if it was drawn out over a few episodes.
This show is so incredible, my knickas
That was my only complaint too. Thack went from
to
to
in basically one episode. Can't really say it was poorly written, the arc was just extremely compressed.
Over all the show is great. The hand held camera work is a bold choice in 2014, and almost every scene had a sway to it.
Soderbergh is a pro, I'm assuming it was meant to feel like you were there with them. This would also go in hand with the naturalistic lighting, and how rich the sound was. I don't mean the soundtrack, I'll get to that in a minute. I mean the sets had weight, you could hear people's heavy shoes hitting the wood floors, walls creaking, etc.
The soundtrack was bananas. It was like watching "Boardwalk Empire" with the "Mass Effect" soundtrack. shyt was bonkers.
Thack gotta be one of the worst protagonists in TV history. I don't mean quality-wise, I mean as far as having virtually
no redeeming qualities. Dude is basically Bubbles as a doctor, with less charisma.
The only way the show could do worse is if Gallinger was the main character.
I assume Algernon is meant to be the counter weight to Thack. If Clive Owen wasn't on all the promo material you could argue Algy is the main character.
I see a lot of people clowning Berty but I
when he just put on his hat and bounced when Elkins said "I volunteered to help Thackery". People were expecting a dramatic blow up and he was like
"fukk it I'm done".
Random thoughts:
at Wu turning that bytch into "The Raid 3". I was watching that scene like
Gallinger and Barrow are in a foot race to see who can catch the most Ls. When they took Gallinger's wife away I knew it was a wrap. "Psychiatrists" back then were a lot more dangerous than doctors.
Narratively this is probably the messiest show since "The Sopranos". They left
a lot of loose ends open to only be averaging 400k an ep with no second season renewal at the time.
