@VMR, is it OK to play that much at such a young age for your protégée ?
Well, good thing you got all that in mind then There are coaches that always push for more so it's good to know some like you have limitsI think most players at her age and skill level (boy and girl) actually play much more than her on a week to week basis. Thats not okay....but they're obsessed with their rankings for scholarships in the future etc.
In general, I am against it and have told her father that. Most players are training 2hrs a day 3/4 times a week then playing tournaments 2 out of every 3 weekends. Thats way way too much..mentally and physically. This past week was draining but it was also a different type for her...doubles + different tennis format. She has been much more tired on a given day (2/3 tough matches of singles) but hasnt had to play 5 in 7 days before. In that respect it was good for endurance/conditioning.
We practice, on average, 3 hours a week total and she often takes weekends off from match play. I make sure of it. She's too young to risk burning her out mentally and she's at the age of growth that makes injuries both more possible and more devastating..particularly her knees. I told them to take this whole week off and to use epsom salts a few times at night for muscles. It starts getting tricky now though because she will be out of school and probably want to play all the time. I think her next tournament in next week in Massachusetts (first national level tourney)...
