Proposed Museum Park Conservancy Could Give Miami a Signature Park

There's no better real estate in Miami than the 30 acres of downtown waterfront space just south of the Pérez Art Museum Miami. But in its current iteration, the rectangular block known as Museum Park is pretty much a waste — an exposed, feature-less patch of shrubby grass that's great for dogs and Frisbee but not much else.

It could be different. A consortium is seeking to totally revitalize the space into a new, signature park for Miami — and the process could get kick-started later today, when city of Miami commissioners discuss the creation of new, non-profit Museum Park Conservancy to usher through a revitalization.

"Ever since [Museum Park] was built, it was meant to be an iconic public space on the water," says Javier Alberto Soto, president of the Miami Foundation, one of the groups leading the effort. "What we've done ... is propose that a conservancy come into existence that would basically be the engine that drives creation of this original world-class vision."

Indeed, the area now known as Museum Park has a long, trying history. The space was first envisioned in the early 1970s as an ambitious, world-class waterfront park for an emerging Miami. In 1976, it opened as Bicentennial Park, but politics and funding battles meant the original vision was never realized. The green space was eventually used for high-profile concerts, including Ultra, but for decades, Miamians lamented the lack of the truly great park they had been promised.

Related Stories
Finally, in 2008, city commissioners approved a revitalization: a $46 million plan by famed New York architecture firm Cooper, Robertson & Partners — the group responsible for projects like the Guggenheim Helsinki and the New Whitney Museum — to burnish the lackluster park, by now called Museum Park, into something closer to its original grand vision.

That effort also sputtered. After the recession, the city's budget was downgraded to just $10 million, and the grand plans for a world-class park for Miami were again put on hold.

The idea with the conservancy, explains Soto, is to create an independent nonprofit group to help raise funds and see the original vision through to completion. New York's Central Park is largely funded by a similar park conservancy, as is Millennium Park in Chicago.

The plans for Museum Park's revamp include a grand entry feature, a waterfront botanical element, play spaces for children, art installations, shaded areas, and fountains. Of the approximately $50 million needed, more than $7 million has already been committed from donors, Soto says, and he expects more will pour in if the city formally approves the conservancy.

"It is an extreme makeover, unlike anything that Miami has ever had," he says. "But very much like what several other cities have."

Broward County sheriff's detectives are searching for two burglars who stole dozens of hair weaves from a Deerfield Beach beauty supply store.

The burglary was reported about 5 a.m. Aug. 8 at Number 1 Beauty Supply, 819 W. Sample Road.

Jury finds 2 Fort Lauderdale detectives not guilty in misconduct case

Jury finds 2 Fort Lauderdale detectives not guilty in misconduct case
William Koepke, Brian Dodge were accused of shaking down drug dealers
Author: Bob Norman, Reporter

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

Suspended detective Brian Dodge was overcome with emotion Friday in court when he heard the words, "Not guilty."

A jury acquitted both Dodge and his former partner at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, suspended detective Billy Keopke of falsifying reports and official misconduct charges involving a 2011 crack cocaine arrest that was caught on surveillance video.

As a tearful Dodge walked away from the courtroom, he had no comment on the verdict.

"He’s grateful the jury did a good job and they got it right," his attorney Michael Dutko said.

"What he said," said Dodge, who was also acquitted of perjury for allegedly lying in a deposition.

The most serious charges against the two men -- including racketeering, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and grand theft -- were dropped before the trial. They involved allegations they stole money from their drug dealer victims.

The surveillance video shows Dodge handling cash prosecutors initially alleged he stole. Prosecutors went forward only with charges the detectives lied in reports about the arrest. They claimed, for instance, that a suspect dropped cocaine in the passengers’ side of a car when the video clearly shows there was no one in the passengers’ side of the car.

"There’s no man with drugs," Assistant State Attorney Ryan Kelley told the jury during closing arguments Thursday evening. "There’s no one at all."

During his argument, Kelley held up the erroneous probable cause affidavit in the case and ripped it in half, saying the reports "weren’t worth the paper they were printed on, because they contain the lies of two sworn police officers and based upon their lies people were hurt, not just [the drug suspects] but the entire judicial system."

Dutko and Dodge, who testified on his own behalf, both readily admitted that mistakes were made but said they were honest ones.

"In the real world, well-intended individuals make mistakes and this was a situation where there were mistakes made,” Dutko told the jury.

Dutko said the officers may have confused the case with another case they’d been working and didn’t pay adequate attention to the paperwork. Dutko also hammered the fact that the suspects were convicted drug dealers.

"You had cocaine dealers, drug dealers that acknowledged they were there to do a drug deal,” he told the jury.

Two jurors told Local 10 they chose to acquit despite the fact there were major falsehoods in the detectives’ story that they couldn’t be sure they were intentional. Both detectives are suspended without pay and there is an internal investigation pending but Dutko said both fully intend to go back to work at the police department.

DAVID HYATT, MIAMI RECORD PRODUCER, DIES SERVING LIFE SENTENCE FOR DRUG CHARGES
  • davidhyatt.jpg

David Lincoln Hyatt, founder of the Miami-based Tavdash Records and the man responsible for discovering the talent of multihit recording artist R. Kelly, died August 11 at the age of 65. Hyatt was reportedly suffering from stage-four prostate cancer.

Born in Jamaica in 1950, Hyatt served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1972. Several years later, he formed Tavdash. Along the way, he discovered the talents of R. Kelly when the singer/songwriter was an up-and-coming artist playing on the streets of Chicago.

According to his son Davin, Hyatt paid for an apartment for Kelly while he was recording his music. In 1989, Kelly released his first single, "Why You Wanna Play Me," with the group Mentally Gifted Men on Hyatt's label. Hyatt was also instrumental in getting Kelly signed to New York-based Jive Records, the label that signed the Backstreet Boys, 'NSync, and Britney Spears in the late 1990s.

"Kelly's talent did it, but at the end of the day, I'm a firm believer that timing is everything," Davin tells New Times. "His time with Tavdash was right on time, and my father signed him to Jive records."

Four years later, Hyatt was arrested. He was a first-time offender accused by the feds of running truckloads of cocaine between Miami and Akron, Ohio, on the side. Hyatt's Miami studio and New York home were raided. Davin remembers opening the front door to the sight of several FBI agents, guns drawn.

"You'll never see your father ever again," Davin remembers one agent saying to him.

Pleading not guilty, Hyatt was tried in federal court in 1993 and convicted on one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine. Hyatt received the maximum sentence: life in prison without parole.

Throughout his time in prison, Hyatt denied having anything to do with an illegal drug-trafficking organization. Hyatt took to the internet to make a public appeal, claiming he was convicted based on only circumstantial evidence. He appealed for an early release several times. Hyatt's sister June Hyatt, an attorney and registered nurse in Hollywood, Florida, unsuccessfully represented her brother during the appeals process, which she describes to New Times as a "helpless" and "terrifying" experience.

Davin appealed to several well-known industry names, including Russell Simmons and Kelly himself, hoping Kelly would at least give his father a shoutout onstage, but it never happened. In his father's final days, Davin pleaded via Twitter with Kelly and even President Obama to get his father released from prison. Kelly did not respond to New Times' request for comment.

Hyatt was profiled in a November 2013 report by the American Civil Liberties Union on nonviolent criminals serving life in prison without parole. According to court documents, federal Judge William Dowd said he had no choice but to abide by the federal sentencing guidelines and give Hyatt a life sentence.

"I think like almost every other district court judge in the United States," Dowd said during sentencing, "at times we have expressed frustration with the straitjacket the guidelines represent, but clearly that's a decision that's way beyond the power of this court to make."

In the latter part of his prison sentence, Hyatt developed prostate cancer that spread to the rest of his body. The cancer went into remission but returned, and Hyatt was denied several compassionate releases from prison up until one week before he died while incarcerated at Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, according to his son.

Recent court documents and filings found in Hyatt's belongings indicate to Davin that his father continued to fight to the very end.

Davin says he was not informed of his father's death until more than a day later. He received a letter August 12 from the warden expressing condolences for his father's passing.

Even while Hyatt was incarcerated, he continued to work on discovering musical talent. Through Hyatt's family, Tampa-based singer/songwriter Marcus Dupree befriend Hyatt in 2007. Dupree considers Hyatt a mentor and credits him for playing a major role in the evolution of R&B.

"David made R. Kelly," Dupree says. "He wouldn't even have a career if it wasn't for David Hyatt."

Hyatt is survived by his children, Davin,Maxvon, Tasha, and Davia.
