I'm not fussed as my TV supports eARC via HDMI but it seems like a strange omission as a lot of people have surround sound systems that use optical.

I think that's what makes all this so ridiculous. Both companies are on some "Oh, we want your money. We just aren't sure how much of it we want, or when we want it "

True, but I think this might me overestimating how many people are using TVs and receivers that make use of HDMI ARC/eARC.

Either way, if we're being honest, it's in a spot where it probably matters more than people think, but not enough to be a huge issue.

Optical doesn't have enough bandwidth to support uncompressed surround sound. eARC is the future. Lastly your TV can handle optical out if it's decent.
