how do I turn off my real name showing up in chat and menus?

Don't worry about it in the menus, there's a privacy option that's for displaying it to friends or not. I think it just puts your name on your console, but nobody can see it if you don't want them too.

Go to the privacy settings in the XMB.

theres only the option for showing other people your name, not one for seeing your name in the ps4 menus

If you go to the "Name and Profile Picture Settings" under the privacy settings...there should be a check box below that says "Display My Full Name and Profile Picture in Games".

Uncheck that box. Also, above the checkbox, there are two rectangular boxes. The one of the left will have your real name and your username will be underneath that. The box on the right will have just your username...choose that one.
