Really that's how most do it, I started that way, used to hit car shows as a teenager, always taking pictures. Met a good friend in HS who was heavy into photography, learned from him and on my own, we kicked it tough and was always shooting and learning. Best thing you can do is find an area of photography that interest you, practice shooting over and over, learning composition, lighting, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. All these play a part in getting great photos. Learn as much as you can and always keep shooting.

Like others mentioned get out there and snap things you like. Events, parties, cars, get a friend to model for you whatever it is. Don’t force it, growth takes time
