Some pics I took back in July during the height of the BLM protests
This was technically my first shoot.

So now that I got yall attention, I have a question So on one of my online profiles I mentioned I was getting into photography. This chick saw that and DM'd me asking what my prices where, I was like :jbhmm: I am more of a hobby photographer and not a pro, but I could do it for like $50 an hour :manny:

She then asks me if I have an portfolio, I was like:patrice: maybe my flickr profile or IG ( im actually working on a website) she then asks me if I have a place where we could do it. :whoo:

So at this point I am like I dont have any real experience with sessions, I dont have the proper equipment outside the camera and I just ordered a flash.
And
see this chick met me on fetlife (BDSM site) and she want me to take pics of her with her "sub". i think the term is "BOUDOIR photography"
I mean I want the experience, but I guess I dont want to over sale myself. I told her the deal and I am waiting to see what she say..

My question is, is this doable with just a camera and a flash? do I need to have props or a light stand and all that for this type of session

I'd say charge more. Props, scouting, editing, equipment cost.

Pick up a reflector. Shoot in natural light. You can do a lot without investing in strobes and you won't have to take that extra equipment into consideration when starting out with your pricing.

An AD200 a softbox and a stand and a sandbag is probably all you need if your just doing these solo portraits.

:blessed:

Think about your composition. There's plenty on YouTube that'll get you through editing in lightroom and photoshop. Freq separation/dodge and burn are great tools.

Shoot a lot. Let your style come to you.

these facebook photographer/model "collab" groups have completely slowed down where i live mainly because whenever any photographers post looking for models it's all "body positive" models. And they be the like the first 15 responses to every post. so now nobody wants to post in these groups to get the in-shape models. :snoop: And of course, we can't really say this shyt to these women, but yeah.

I think that is hilarious, its america, the average person is fat :yeshrug: lol.. I just think its funny that these chicks want to be considered models but refuse to do the work that it takes to be a model. So now there is no incentive to be in decent shape cause we arent allowed to exclude them anymore lol

I've seen that here too. It sucks when you've got a particular vision that you're trying to execute ..

It's tough. It's so saturated and people want a whole branding campaign (pictures, commercials, logos,)...all kinds of shyt for like $20. :mjlol: Especially being black, people will try and negotiate down our already low prices, then go pay some white photographer a grip with no hesitation and no problems. There's so much i want to say about this stuff on my social medias but i just try to shut up. :francis:

I go through this with my tax business, you tell them $250 for a business and they look at you like :damn::scusthov: "thats alot" but go to HR block and pay them $400 for single:snoop: them nikkas dont even give copies sometimes. or they will say how they can just go to turbo tax for free. nikkas hate paying black people for anything..

I've been charging 135/hr. That includes the time it take to scout, plan, edit etc.

I've done a few album covers and other shyt and now other photographers come to me talking about pricing.

And I think the starting rate is around 500 or 1k a day.

I fukk with those prices, but it blows my mind hearing people charge those rates only makes 38 to 70k a year.

Are full time. Photographers not being as aggressive on their booking and owning their right for lucrative projects.

An album cover for a marginally big artist can get you 10k for a shot

Coli. Experts put me on game.

Pricing is a topic I see tons of people asking about online and it’s a tough one.
There’s so many things that factor into a price that make it difficult to give hard figures for someone to follow for their own pricing strategy.

Doing research in your local area helps...but at the same time, the quotes you’ll get will often be miles apart in terms of price and end up leaving you just as lost.

What I’ve found in about 2.5 years of doing videography, photography, and audio recording professionally full time is that in the beginning you HAVE to do A LOT of free work to build a portfolio and start to build your reputation. Even with a decent portfolio of high level recognizable clients I was still (and a lot of times still am) under pricing myself. The idea has always been to get repeat business at a low price point but I’ve found that the clients that pay the least ALWAYS demand the most. You’d think people would be grateful but unfortunately that often isn’t the case.

I can go on and on all day about it but if I could give a piece of advice that I think would be the most helpful is...
When you come up with a quote, ALWAYS consider the hours you’ll have to work to get the project done. Ask yourself “what’s an hourly rate I would be happy with and not end up regretting half way through a project”. What ever that number is, DOUBLE IT, because if you do things the RIGHT way, you’ll need to set aside about 40% of your money for taxes. So I you say “I’d be happy making $20 an hour doing photography” you NEED to charge a MINIMUM of $40 an hour. Your rate of $135 is decent. I’ve charged as little as $75 an hour and as much as $700 an hour. The price varies based on doing business with mom and pops vs government contracts.

Can I get some help on self photography?

I bought the cheapest canon dslr last year. I was shooting in A+ which was fine, but I want to shoot in manual.

I started trying self photography on myself, but I can’t get the camera to focus. I put something up, put a business card on it, focused, set the timer, and stepped into frame, and I was blurry.

Then I used the camera connect app, since it’s a remote shutter with auto focus, and the settings didn’t make a decent pic.

Get this. I have old professional photos of myself that I checked the file info, used the exact same settings and lens, and the pics STILL came out terrible.

I shoot in raw. And these are the settings I used:

85mm lens 1/160 f4.5 iso 200
