Exactly. But it's those hobbyists that swear they want to make a living out of this that take bottom of the barrel prices and destroy the market.
It's crazy how many jobs I've had to walk away from because the customer tells me that they know a person that will do the video for $100 - $150.
The funny thing is that they never become repeat customers because at that price the quality is amateur as hell.
I run into a lot of people that think they can put together what we do with their own iphones. It's nuts.
That's why I take my portfolio serious and avoid the dirt cheap prices.
I'd rather due the gig 100% for free instead of charging something close to nothing.
people be out here undercharging like shyt. especially in major cities. i seen a mufukka talking bout 2 hr photoshoot for $25 :dead:

i just started shooting music videos and doing for $300. I'll build my way up to hopefully a rack. You gotta start somewhere to build up your rep. so as far as the $150 for a video I can see that being the case. If you can come out the gate chargin a rack with no track record then more power to you.

do you use a canon? nice pictures as far as what is taking place (#blackexcellence) but asking cuz of the grain in low light. canon's are infamous for being terrible in low light.

I use a Fuji xpro1 w/ canon FD glass. I don't mind grain personally, comes with the territory of low light photography. I care more about color reproduction and the absence of moire, banding, etc

i feel you. i dislike grain. Well mostly in video unless its a post effect for stylistic reasons.
i just got a sigma 18-35 canon glass for my sony camera. i love it. f1.8 crazy in low light. replaced my sigma 30mm 1.4 and rokinon 12mm /2. sold those lenses

IMO it’s better to build your way up doing jobs for free. Customers won’t get addicted to “free” but if you build a base on dirt cheap prices, they’ll just go elsewhere the day you try to raise your prices. That’s why what I do for people with small budgets is I offer them smaller projects. A one minute video for $150 is doable if the video is simple enough and the client is organized. I’m not doing an entire music video for $150. That’s nuts. You have to go after the right clients too. As much as I love music, indie “artists” (which most of the time are just arrogant hobbyists with no respect for anyone else’s craft) are often times the worst to deal with. That’s why I’ve been going after local businesses more and pitching them the idea of needing content to increase their visibility on social media which them leads to better opportunities to earn more paying clients. You have to sell your services in a way that gives them confidence that the content you create for them is investment and not just a random experiment where they are potentially just throwing away money.
