This album kinda ruined albums for me. Nothing else ever was as inventive with the slang, as lush with combination of the soundscapes and the visuals being painted with words. I'd listen to arguments on other albums being as good musically/lyrically/etc, but in terms of cinema on wax? Nah, nothing else like it.

I remember hearing since Ghost & Rae could make songs at a quicker pace than GZA they’d hop on some beats meant for LS that ended up on OB4CL…

I always tried to guess which beats those might’ve been…

I’m thinking:

Spot Rusherz (def sounds like a GZA beat, the piano, more simplistic)

Guillotine Swordz

Incarcerated Scarfaces (maaaaybe…another simplistic beat that I could hear GZA over)

^^^OG Source review from 95

Last sentence makes me think they wanted to give it 5 mics. They were lame af about giving out 5 mics and missed several classics while incorrectly awarding it to undeserving albums (LAD has too many skips to be 5 mics, blueprint & Stillmatic are NOT 5 mics).

The most flawless street rap album oat with the most range. Beats broke new ground, guys still tryna outdo the rza. Like rza said if rae dont win best actor oscar, ghost wins supporting.

The only albums I put above it are ones just as flawless but maybe do other things as good.

Supreme clientele i think sometimes could go up against it. Liquid swords. Hell on earth. Both cause the vibe is next level, taken a step further from the cuban/infamous sound.

Hard for me not to say maybe life after death and wu forever could, despite rhe few filer tracks on each. Track for track both can match and then some.

But we’re talking bible level albums here, not ya average fair. But i dont think anything else is on its level.

Last couple years, OB4CL moved from top 5 into my #1 slot.

Only albums I really think are on the level are Illmatic and The Infamous...don't get me wrong, I love Liquid Swords, it's a top 10 (closer to top 5) album for me, but I think Purple Tape has more range. It def has more range than Hell on Earth.

This time of year tho, I usually shelve CL in favor of LS, and vice versa in the spring/summer.

Forever and LAD both have far too much filler to compare....there's something to be said about an album like OB4CL, or Liquid Swords or Infamous where you can throw them on and you are obligated to listen from start to finish with no skips...the peaks of other albums are there, but the "lows" are the reasons they lose out.

Unpopular opinion, and lyrically it's nowhere even near Purple Tap, but The War Report is a very complete street album, start to finish with lots of range. One of my personal favs all time.
