Veldheer disputes McKenzie’s claim he didn’t want to be a Raider

Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie was stung by the decision of left tackle Jared Veldheerto leave in free agency, saying: “The kid didn’t want to play for the Raiders anymore, and I struggled with that.”

Veldheer, as you might imagine, had a different version of events.

“I appreciate everything that Oakland did for me over the last four years, we just couldn’t get [a contract] done,” the now-Cardinals left tackle told Doug and Wolf on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be there, because I know that’s been said recently. That just wasn’t the case. Things were unable to get done at the table and that led to free agency and now I looking forward to Arizona and looking to what the future has here.”

Veldheer also said things started moving quickly when Cardinals G.M. Steve Keim started the process of pursuing him.

And to be frank, even if the money was equal, it’s hard to argue that being a Raider is a better deal than being a Cardinal in any respect.

The team’s better, the stadium’s nicer, and even though the Cardinals aren’t a model of traditional stability, they’re moving in the right direction at the moment.

So to be honest, it’s hard to figure why Veldheer’s fighting it.

what was he supposed to say? he pretty much admitted that the raiders didn't pony up and try to overpay him to stay.

and reggie, mark nor allen are to blame for the stadium being a piece of shyt. there's no money in oakland.

Matt Schaub's restructured contract contains no guaranteed money beyond 2014.

Schaub will make $8 million fully guaranteed (plus another $3 million in unlikely incentives) to be the Raiders' band-aid starter this season. He's on the books for a $5.5 million non-guaranteed base in 2015. It's a good deal for the Raiders in that they can get out pain-free if Schaub continues the 2013 form that saw him get benched in favor of Case Keenum.

That is great cap management right there. Al Davis would have probably given Vick his 3rd $100MM contract

I don't mind a QB at 5 even tho i prefer a wide receiver or a mack or clowney.

I just want this team to stay under the cap for the next 5 to 6 years and compete at a level without being in a bind like the dallas cowboys..

dallas has all that overpaid talent and what have they showed for it 7-9 or 8-8 records..

If Clowney is available, he should be our first choice over everyone else honestly

clowney gone before 5

and REMEMBER THIS POST HERE.. THE RAIDERS WILL NOT SELECT MACK IF HE'S AVAILABLE or EVEN WATKINS.

I Just know mckenzie train of thought.. they will trade down to acquire a later pick and decide to get carr. watch and see.

team only have 6 picks in this draft and they willing to trade down to get another pick.

McCaczie gunna reach on Carr like he did on Hayden, if he's so addament on getting him he needs to pick up a 2nd and 3rd and move to the mid 20's or something

that's what happens when you have a meddling owner. Jerry and Snyder appear to be the last of that breed. lack of stability has proven to be detrimental to the success of the franchise.

Clowney and Watkins are 2 guys I would not trade down from, but considering how deep this draft is, he'd be wise to trade down.

I would only trade down soon when i hear who ever cleveland draft and say clowney is gone at 2 and watkins is gone to cleveland and more likely thats the word out of cleveland is.

But if khalil mack is sitting there u draft him because atlanta for sure will pick him at 6 or tampa at 7

watkins with josh gordon? wow, that's sick and insanely entertaining to watch. I truly believe CLE is going for a QB.

if ATL loves MACK, make them trade up with us for that pick or run the risk of the raiders trading away that pick to another team that loves MACK. With cats like Mike Evans, Ant Barr out there, there are some franchise changing talent to be had in the middle to end of the first round.

Reggie needs to crush in this draft to make his offseason successful. He definitely did well with Sio Moore and Stacey McGee
