Grades on the pick:
15. Oakland Raiders (from ARI) | Kolton Miller | OT | UCLA | Grade:D
I like the Raiders making this trade to move back a few spots, but they could have used this pick on a much better player. Miller's athleticism and upside are certainly intriguing, and Oakland definitely needs a future replacement for Donald Penn, but reaching for him over the likes of Derwin James and a host of other defenders was tough to watch. With so many needs and so much value elsewhere, the Raiders turned a strong trade into a head-scratching selection.

Loser: Raiders eschew defense for … Kolton Miller?
Derwin James. Tremaine Edmunds. Leighton Vander Esche. Taven Bryan. All four of these guys were on the board when Oakland picked and could have stepped in from Day 1 to bolster what’s been a truly abysmal defense the past couple of seasons. In particular, not taking either James or Edmunds here is just mind boggling, especially when you consider the Raiders ended up taking Kolton Miller out of UCLA.
Miller has great physical attributes. He’s very athletic. He’s very tall, at 6-foot-9. He’s also extremely raw, plays far too upright and will get bull rushed into Derek Carr by defensive ends with power. He’s a player who is being drafted high due to his potential, rather than any real proven production. It was, quite simply, a baffling pick. The Raiders could have done better and improved their roster for immediate success.

15. Kolton Miller, OT UCLA — Oakland Raiders (via ARI)
GRADE: D+
Analysis: The Raiders made some good moves on Thursday night — trading down for more picks and then trading for Steelers WR Martavis Bryant — but this was not one of them. Miller is a good athlete but needs refinement. And Raiders offensive line coach Tom Cable doesn’t have the best reputation as a developer after his time in Seattle.

Oakland Raiders
Draft picks: UCLA OT
Kolton Miller (No. 15 overall).
Day 1 grade: C
The skinny: With many top-notch defenders on the board, the
Raiders instead take an athletic but inconsistent tackle in Miller. His tape did not put him in the mid-first round. The team did get a third- and fifth-round pick in the trade to with Arizona to move five picks down (from 10 to 15), so that's a plus.

15. Oakland Raiders (from Cardinals): OT Kolton Miller, UCLA
Jon Gruden spoke at the combine about his desire to “
throw the game back to 1998,” so it’s no big surprise that the Raiders’ first pick of the new Gruden era is a trench player. Miller is an athletic tackle prospect with rare size and elite athleticism: He’s 6-foot-9 and 309 pounds, sports 34-plus-inch arms,
tested out in the 99th percentile in athleticism for an offensive lineman per SPARQ, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.95 seconds, and registered a 10-plus-foot broad jump. Unfortunately, Miller didn’t always display that athleticism on the field, at times struggling with speed off the edge,
lunging, falling off of blocks, and letting
rushers into his frame. Still, he’s likely to start early in his career and has the physical upside to develop into a solid starter.

15. OAKLAND RAIDERS—T KOLTON MILLER
Peter King called it. The Raiders have a lot of defensive needs, but left tackle Donald Penn is approaching the 18th tee box on his career and Derek Carr’s blind side must be protected, especially given that reincarnated head coach Jon Gruden prefers to put the QB under center, not in shotgun. It’ll be interesting to see if Miller plays on the right side as a rookie. Switching sides as a blocker is very difficult, especially if you’re trying to acclimate to the pro game. Miller did, however, play both sides at UCLA. We grade this pick down just a bit because the Raiders have gigantic needs at linebacker and cornerback, and left plenty of good players on the board.

15) Oakland Raiders: OT Kolton Miller, UCLA – Oakland moved down and reached for protection for Derek Carr. Miller is very athletic and the Raiders need to replace Donald Penn at left tackle. Still, for a team that needs so much help on defense, this lacked pop.
Grade: C+

No. 15 pick: The Oakland Raiders select Kolton Miller
Too low, just right, or too high? On physical numbers alone, we’ll say just right. Dude’s almost 6’9, 300-plus, and he seems to get low really well. And he kept
Josh Rosen’s sack rate pretty low even though everyone knew UCLA was passing. Could do worse there.
