It will be in Oakland's best interest to start TP next year, fan interest and best chance at winning, they pretty much have nothing on the offensive side of the ball talent wise outside of Jennings

Sources: Raiders keep Jason Tarver

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders have re-signed defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, according to NFL sources, on the day his contract expired.

The Raiders' defense improved from 29th overall in 2011 to 18th in 2012, Tarver's first season as the team's defensive coordinator.

But Oakland slipped to 22nd in total defense this season, a year in which it allowedPhiladelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles to tie an NFL record with seven touchdown passes and Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles to catch eight passes for 195 yards and score five total touchdowns.

According to a league source, three assistants from last year's staff are not being retained -- defensive backs coaches Clayton Lopez and Johnnie Lynn and assistant special teams coach Keith Burns.

When the season ended, only offensive coordinator Greg Olson and linebackers coach Bob Sanders had contracts for 2014, but defensive line coach Terrell Williams, running backs coach Kelly Skipper and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo agreed to one-year deals shortly thereafter, before assistant head coach/offensive line coach Tony Sparano received a two-year extension.

The latest to re-sign were special teams coach Bobby April, receivers coach Ted Gilmore and tight ends coach Mark Hutson, though the future of senior offensive assistant Al Saunders was not immediately known.

Well at least they let the defensive backs coaches go.

So now it's time to look at free-agents before the draft

Terrelle Pryor fires controversial agent

It seems to have come about a month late but Terrelle Pryor has fired his agent, as first reported by Mike Garafolo of Fox Spots. For those unfamiliar, Pryor's agent is Jerome Stanley, who following Dennis Allen announcing that Terrelle Pryor would be starting for the Raiders in the season finale, accused Allen of setting up his client to fail.

"I think they're putting him in hopes that he fails," Pryor's agent Jerome Stanley told reporters from CSN Bay Area. "That's what I think coach is doing. I think they're putting him in hopes that he has a bad game, so he can then justify the Matt McGloin situation. I think that's what's going on, I do and it's ridiculous."

He went on to say the Pryor should have been given the job back immediately after he was healthy and that Pryor is "the best and most dynamic athlete in the NFL playing the quarterback position." And Allen "stumbled upon a gem."

Allen, upon hearing the news, fired back at Stanley.

"First, I'd say that's the stupidest thing I've ever friggin' heard," said Allen. "No coach in their right mind ... This isn't The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. This isn't made-for-TV drama. This is football. We make our football decisions based solely on that, nothing other than that. So I don't really give it a lot of thought. I can't control the ignorance that might come out of somebody else's mouth, but I've talked to Terrelle about it. It's in situations like that you have to separate the player from the agent. He doesn't have control."

Whether Pryor's agent's words were his feelings alone or that of his client remains to be seen. Though Pryor apologized for his agent's actions, he never denied sharing the same feelings as his agent in this regard, even when asked the question directly.

Regardless of how it went down, it was extremely unwise for Stanley to publicly call out Dennis Allen for conspiring against Pryor. This move was therefore expected to happen at some point either for Pryor to save face by distancing himself from Stanley, or simply to rid himself of a bad agent.

It’s unclear whether defensive end Greg Hardy will be part of that group. Hardy tied a club record with 15 sacks during the final year of his contract, and is looking for a deal commensurate with one of the league’s top pass-rushers.

He may not find it with Carolina.

Gettleman twice was asked about Hardy, and didn’t talk about him in the same terms he used in discussing Newton.

The Panthers could use the franchise tag on Hardy, projected to be around $12 million for defensive ends, or let him leave in free agency. Gettleman said that scenario happens every year around the league.

“Everybody lets players go. There isn’t a team in this league that hasn’t let a big dog walk out the door. And don’t print that I’m saying that he’s going to go,” Gettleman said. “I’m just making a statement. There isn’t anybody that hasn’t done that. It’s a whole big puzzle we’re putting together and he’s one of the pieces.”

Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie says team improved in 2013

ALAMEDA -- General manager Reggie McKenzie told the local media Thursday that he saw the Raiders as "a different 4-12 team" in 2013, and that he is looking forward to operating with a full draft and salary cap room this year.

He also outlined some of his philosophies and ideas regarding the future.

Although a six-game losing streak to close out the season gave the Raiders the same won-lost record as in 2012, McKenzie didn't see it as the same product.

The running game was better, McKenzie said, and the team was more competitive, particularly early in the season. McKenzie conceded the defense was smaller, short on depth and wore down in November, having trouble on third down.

"But the overall play was better in 2013, if you're comparing," McKenzie said.

More items addressed by McKenzie in an approximately 45-minute news conference:

  • An agreement was being finalized with special teams coordinator Bobby April, who joins defensive coordinator Jason Tarver and offensive line coach/assistant head coach Tony Sparano as returning assistants on coach Dennis Allen's staff.

  • Areas that need improvement are everywhere.

"Biggest need? We have biggest needs, with an 's'," McKenzie said.

He included the quarterback position in that assessment. McKenzie cited Terrelle Pryor's inconsistency as an issue, and while he liked Matt McGloin's ability to get the ball out quickly, the G.M. said his decision-making down the stretch was a problem.

Asked about the possibility of drafting Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, McKenzie said, "He's a playmaker. ... Whether it's him or any of these other guys, when you can add a playmaker to your team, that's what you're shooting for."

However, McKenzie also said he wants a veteran presence (currently Trent Edwards) at the position and ideally wouldn't start a rookie at quarterback.

  • McKenzie sounded as if key unrestricted free agents Lamarr Houston, Jared Veldheer, Charles Woodson and Rashad Jennings will all be pursued, and discussions are under way with the agents for all players.

Running back Darren McFadden looks destined to hit the open market.

"His agent has no idea what his market value will be, and I couldn't tell you what the other 31 teams think," McKenzie said.

McKenzie would prefer a long-term deal for Veldheer or Houston rather than using the franchise tag.

  • On the Raiders' approach to free agency with the possibility of being as much as $50 million under the salary cap, McKenzie said: "We're going to do things that make sense. Just because I have $5 in my pocket, that doesn't mean I have to spend all of it on junk."

  • Thoughts relayed to him in postseason discussions with owner Mark Davis: "He saw some progress in some areas, absolutely, but still, it's the bottom line, and like myself, Mark wants some better results."

  • Why he stayed silent while the job status of Allen was an open debate as the season came to a close: "I wasn't going to add fuel to just to put out a fire that wasn't there. I hate that stuff has to get thrown around," McKenzie said.

  • McKenzie said his first two drafts, which haven't brought much immediate production, will be better assessed down the road.

"We'll be better able to assess them in the next year to a year-and-a-half what they can do and who they truly are as players," he said.

With so many late-round draft picks and undrafted players assuming starting roles, McKenzie conceded it illustrated the lack of overall talent on the 2013 roster.

"Definitely we lack some talent in some areas, no question," McKenzie said.
