My completely speculative guess is that he held off sparring to get his head right and didn't pick up until after he signed the fight. He was probably fine training, but as soon as he started taking hits the chin was reeling. I've heard stories from Schaub and Rogan about fighters who knew there was something wrong (Rogan says Forrest was getting dropped consistently before he even got into the Anderson murder fight, but because of how major the fight was he didn't pull out). Plus we've seen what happens when cats rush back from bad KO's; I couldn't picture Chad Mendes getting dropped by Franky let alone KO'ed before it actually happened for example.

Stipe doesn't just train full time he is also a fire fighter maybe that also had something to do with it...? isn't he also engaged? Maybe he wants to focus on getting married

Stipe has had 3 fights this year. I don't see any problem with him wanting to take some time off to enjoy being champ, as long as he's ready to go at the beginning of 2017.

No doubt but "time off" can become extended vacation real quick.

Garbrandt has been on a tear. The #1 contender spot has been between him and TJ. Considering TJ fought Cruz this year, I agree with the Garbrandt/Cruz match-up.

But Dana said he was calling his phone constantly trying to get a fight. He signed an agreement and all the sudden pulls out with no explanation?
