He is very pro japan. You're correct. He had a lot of things that were just bad timing .The earthquake in Japan in 2011 messed him up and made it tough for him as he felt a need to be a bit of a hero for Japan at the time, as well as having his kid at the time. He also had his troubles with the Yakuza which he had finally settled around that time. After he beat Beerbohm he said he was ready to fight full time in America. Unfortunately Joe Silva has never liked him. I've personally heard him say things about Aoki which let me know he wasn't coming to the UFC during that time period. Unfortunately they also took over Strikeforce at the time which killed that deal as well. From what i understand (I am sure of it, just not all the details) they had some secret negotiations with him to before the UFC's going to Asia the last two years but the offer was so low it wasn't worth considering. They offered another good Asian name a spot on the same card as Aoki as well, but for the life of me i can't remember who it was. But he turned it down as well because of the low offer.

Aoki and Sergei Kharitonov are my two biggest let downs for not going to the UFC. I think they're both past their expiration dates now but i'd love to see it. My current most wanted is Tyrone Spong who has been begging to be signed. It's a joke that a guy like that publicly asks to be signed over and over and goes to shows and personally asks to be signed but can't get in. Meanwhile you have awful TUF fighters and foreign rejects who get in. Joe Silva would match him up with a wrestler anyways. lol. They need to sign him and do Spong vs Rampage since they have a history of beef with each other.

Daps and reps. So much info I didn't know. Thank you! Yeah I never understood why some deals fall through. I think Joe Silva has sort of fallen off a bit on match making, but that's another discussion. Spong vs Page would be great.

Most of the cats I wanna see in MMA are from the grappling world. I'm really excited to see how Rafael Lovato Jr and Justin Rader do.

I'm excited to see how my boy Ryan Hall does. He's up at Tri-Star when he trains MMA, he owns a gym in D.C. He's going about it right and not trying to jump in too fast. He's even competing in wrestling tournaments and boxing matches to get experience. I really think he'll be someone to watch for at 145. His heel hooks, triangles, darce/brabo chokes, arm triangles, are all fantastic. His back takes are out of this world good. He's like 5-0 pro, all finishes, and lost an amateur fight back in 2006.He's currently in Titan FC.

How much of a say does Joe Silva have in terms of guys getting signed or not? What do you think of the Ben Askren situation? CM Punk?

yeah. Ryan Hall is a beast. I'm bummed out Robert Drysdale fukked up so badly. I was interested in seeing what he could do. Not surprised he failed for TRT/PED's considering the guys he hangs with. Braulio Estima was another interesting guy who was already to go in 100% with MMA and then stopped after getting a fight.

Kron Gracie is the guy i'm interested now. I had very high hopes but after hearing some of his comments about stand up and seeing his first fight i'm not so high on him anymore. Buchecha has been training MMA with a lot of type guys lately and i think he's going to make a full transition soon. That will be crazy if he's good.

As far as Joe Silva he has 99% say on who is signed. He often has first and final say. A lot of the criticism Dana gets is for Joe's decisions. Dana is a tv guy. That's his main function. He works on tv contracts and deals. Of course he knows about the fights and most of the guys in the UFC but if you ever talk to him you'd be shocked at how little he follows the sport or knows about the fighters past fights and their coming up, accolades, backgrounds, etc.

I always wondered that. I seem to see him less and less at events. He doesn't seem to be that much of a fan anymore, honestly. I'm sure he's very busy, and with the crazy pace of the UFC's new schedule, he's probably burned out and/or doesn't even care about anyone besides the top guys. That's cool about Joe Silva.

I'm bummed about Drysdale too. It's really disappointing. A lot of times it's a crap shoot about these high level BJJ guys because a lot of them just aren't used to grappling against people that aren't trying to stand up. They're too used to the person on top "playing guard" when they get swept. Also the open guard work has become so ridiculously good in modern high level jiu-jitsu that it's damn near impossible to lose if your guard is not passable (see Rafa Mendes, Miyao Bros, Keenan Cornelius, etc.) Drysdale knew the importance of that, but he's getting older and he might not even fight again after this fiasco. Braulio Estima is getting older and had a broken neck...I understand why he opted out after his first win to just focus on jiu-jitsu and his family.

I'm interested in Kron too. I thought it was cool that he pulled guard and climbed up to an armbar, but I wonder how successful that strategy will be against better opponents. If anyone could do a throwback to old school BJJ in MMA, it's Kron, but if he really thinks he doesn't need to train anything but BJJ I think he'll be wrong. I want to see him rematch Garry Tonon, either in grappling or MMA. Not sure if you're familiar, but at ADCC/Abu Dhabi last year, Garry Tonon was relatively unknown and had Kron beat, but tapped with 3 seconds left because he didn't know the time. he called him out at Metamoris for a rematch, and said he'd be willing to go to MMA if Kron didn't want to come to Metamoris or ADCC for a possible rematch. Tonon is a savage.

I didn't know that about Buchecha. I could see him being very good if he can develop even some decent wrestling and standup. I don't compare many jiu-jitsu athletes to Jacare in terms of athleticism and explosiveness, but Buchecha is really the guy I think of that comes close.

More Twister goodness.

Good looking out!

Here's Aoki's from last night

FamousSpiritedAnnashummingbird.gif

Couple Aoki stories. he was showing an odd foot lock at a seminar and some dude was like "Can you show it one more time? What's that supposed to feel like on the receiving end?" Aoki cranked the shyt out of the guy's foot, the guy screamed in pain, and Aoki said "There you go" and walked off.

Veteran middleweight Costas Philippou has been forced off this month’s UFC Fight Night 59 main card with an injury.

Sources close to the event told MMAjunkie that Philippou (13-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC) was forced out of his bout with Uriah Hall (9-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) due to a rib injury. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the UFC hasn’t made a formal announcement.

A replacement search is underway.

Featuring a featherweight headliner between Conor McGregor and Dennis Siver, UFC Fight Night 59 takes place Jan. 18 at Boston’s TD Arena. The bulk of the card airs on FOX Sports 1 following a pair of UFC Fight Pass prelims.

Philippou and Hall were actually slated to meet in a rematch at the event. Philippou won the duo’s first meeting via majority decision at Ring of Combat 34 in 2011.

More recently, Philippou, who’s ranked No. 13 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA middleweight rankings, snapped a two-fight skid with a highlight-reel knockout of Lorenz Larkin at UFC Fight Night 40 in May.

Hall, “The Ultimate Fighter 17″ runner-up, recently halted a two-fight skid of his own with back-to-back wins over Chris Leben and Thiago Santos.

Tarec Saffiediene is out of his fight against Matt Brown at UFC 62 due to a groin injury. They should get Eric Silva for him considering it was possibly FOTY in 2014 and Silva wants that rematch/is fresh off his last can fight
