rumor season began with a vengeance yesterday after Saturday's loss in the Fiesta with several reports suggesting multiple NFL franchises
began doing their homework on Michigan's headman as a candidate.
While I agree with the sentiment that he’d go if an outright offer were made, the vibe I’ve gotten from players inside the program is their belief he’ll be returning to Ann Arbor next season. While he has yet to formally address the team about the rumors, some key members I’ve checked with have been told not to worry. I’ve also been told they expect him to address the team, “soon.” The reasoning is two-fold…
1.)to appease any lingering player concerns
2.)to lay rest concerns expressed by donors considering major collective support
I’m told there are donors expressing hesitancy about moving forward with possible contributions while there’s uncertainty about Harbaugh’s future. A statement from him would obviously go a long way towards easing those concerns.
Now, how soon is “soon?” I wasn’t given an exact timeline, but I know Harbaugh and his coaches are currently on a postseason break, and are expected back in town by Friday. It’s possible that during his time away with family that he and/or the agency he works closely with… i.e. Athletes First… are gauging interest from NFL suitors. There are
reports that he has already been in contact with the Carolina Panthers. I haven’t yet confirmed their veracity, but some sources in Michigan circles (above the player level) believe he would consider an offer if one came, but that nothing short of that will keep his interest. Even if such machinations are happening, reasonable speculation from those I’ve spoken to is he’ll address the rumors upon his return. If that doesn't happen, the the confidence expressed today will be affected.
That’s all for now. This evening I’ll be digging deep with NFL sources to see what they’re hearing on that side of things.
As always, stay tuned.
