Notes
Murphy/in-home/etc. Michigan will host Phoenix (AZ) Brophy Prep 2016 four-star defensive end
Connor Murphy this weekend for an official visit.
His in-home with Murphy on Tuesday is sure to be next in the line of heavily publicized recruiting visits for Harbaugh, as he stayed in the home of the Murphy family in an effort to continue to pitch the four-star to head to Ann Arbor.
Ironically enough, former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke is scheduled to be in the home of Murphy next before he heads to Ann Arbor for an official visit this weekend. Right now, my belief is that if Michigan pushes hard for Murphy down the stretch that he will become a Wolverine, and I'm very close to putting a 247Sports Crystal Ball in for Michigan right now. The major reason is simple: Murphy's three presumed finalists (Michigan, USC, Oregon) all underwent defensive changes this off-season. The difference? Harbaugh and his long-time relationship with the entire Murphy family.
OL stuff: With the cat out of the bag on what looks like another current verbal commitment ending up elsewhere (
Erik Swenson), Michigan is evaluating other options to try to find a true tackle in this class.
Tim Drevno and
Tyrone Wheatley made what looks to be a surprise appearance at the home of Top100 tackle
E.J. Price, who had Michigan as one of his eight different leaders early in the process. His recruitment looks to be down to Auburn and Georgia, and those are the two schools he has yet to take an official to at this point. It'd be a major surprise if he even ended up visiting Michigan before the process ends in a couple weeks.
We don't currently see Baltimore (MD) Gilman three-star
Stephen Spanellis as a take, despite the recent official visit and offer from the Harbaugh staff (he had one under Hoke). Would Michigan push for Penn State commitment Will Fries? Our current belief is no.
Jake Raulerson, the interior lineman and Texas grad transfer, will visit UCLA this weekend and may visit one of Florida and Oregon before he makes a decision.
Will the staff reach here? I don't believe so, and them seeing an elite long-shot like Price is a good indicator that swinging for the fences is how they may play this.
Another west coast CB: Michigan cornerbacks coach Mike Zordich was in Los Angeles last week to check in on top Michigan target
David Long, who is expected to pledge to the Wolverines on Thursday afternoon on ESPN.
However, another noteworthy he stop he made while in the area was to Salesian high school, where he caught up with the coaches of 2017 Top100 cornerback
Deommodore Lenoir, who was offered by the staff a couple months ago.
"I didn't really get to see coach while he was here, but he talked to my coaches," Lenoir said. "Michigan is one of those schools that I'm definitely interested in but would need to go out to see before I'd know how interested I really was."
Lenoir says that Michigan is a school he'd currently use for an official visit this upcoming fall, but said he'd have to continue a relationship with the coaching staff and get to know them better at the same time. Washington and UCLA are two programs he's been reportedly high on for a while.
More on Harris: Michigan head coach
Jim Harbaugh was at Antioch (CA) high school on Tuesday to check in on arguably 2017's top overall prospect in five-star running back
Najee Harris. Antioch offensive coordinator Brett Dudley was among those who met up with Harbaugh.
"Things went well with Coach Harbaugh," he said. "He talked a lot about how he thought of Najee as a player and a person. We worked on setting up a spring visit out to Michigan so that Najee can see it for himself. I don't like to speak for him as far as his interest goes, but he is open to other campuses so that he can find the perfect fit for himself."
As we reported on Tuesday, we believe Michigan can get Harris on campus this spring. His commitment to Alabama is publicly considered firm but the true belief is that it's relatively soft and the Tide will have to work to keep him signed.
Bits
- Michigan has reached out to another Baylor commitment, this time 2017 four-star wide receiver
Jhamon Ausbon, who recently transferred to IMG Academy. Ausbon says he's interested in what Michigan has to say and would like an offer from the program. The staff offered five-star linebacker and current Bears verbal
Baron Browning last week.
-
Don Brown has been in contact with 2017 four-star linebacker Willie Gay out of Starkville, MS...that's Mississippi State's backyard. No offer yet, and it may never come, but Michigan is becoming more bold in areas they would never have even thought of recruiting in the past.
-
Jay Harbaugh offered 2017 four-star offensive lineman
Aaron Banks (El Cerrito, CA) on Tuesday night. Banks is someone Michigan has gone to see three times now during evaluation periods and an offer nearly came this summer. Add him to the list of 2017 OL that the staff should have a strong shot at. USC is considered the early leader.
- Michigan is continuing to push to get back into the recruitments of 2017 five-stars Jeffrey Okudah and Darnay Holmes. Okudah, as we reported a couple weeks ago, included Michigan in a top group. Holmes may be tougher to crack, but the staff is working to get back in his race also.
