Funchess officially going pro
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan junior wide receiver Devin Funchess announced on Tuesday (Dec. 9) that he will forgo his final year of eligibility and declare for early entry into the 2015 National Football League (NFL) Draft.
"I would like to thank my family, coaches and teammates for their support," said Funchess. "It's always been a dream of mine to play in the NFL, and I am prepared to take the next step in my journey.
"I want to personally thank Coach Hoke and his staff," Funchess added. "I've learned life and character lessons from them, and they have helped me become a better person and man. I love Michigan. From the former players to the fans, it's a special place. The opportunity to play in the Big House in front of 100,000 strong each week, those are memories that will last with me forever. It's been an honor to strap on the winged helmet for three years with my teammates, and I will always bleed Maize and Blue."
Funchess, a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches, led the Wolverines with 62 receptions for 733 yards and four touchdowns in his first full season at wide receiver in 2014. He finished the regular season third in the Big Ten in receptions and seventh in the conference in receiving yards.
In 37 career games, Funchess hauled in 126 receptions for 1,715 yards and 15 touchdowns. A native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, Funchess finished his collegiate career by catching at least one pass in 25 straight games, tied for the eighth-longest streak in school history. His five career 100-yard receiving games, which included two this season, are tied for 12th on Michigan's all-time list.
Funchess played tight end his first two seasons at U-M, earning Big Ten Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year honors as a sophomore after hauling in 47 receptions for 727 yards and six touchdowns. His 727 receiving yards in 2013 marked the most all-time by a U-M tight end in a single season, surpassing Jim Mandich's previous program record of 662 yards in 1969.
The 2015 NFL Draft will take place April 30-May 2 at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago.
