The Michigan Wolverines wrapped up their 2015 recruiting class on National Signing Day, but there could still be a few surprise additions.
Linebacker Roquan Smith is still in the mix after rescinding his commitment to UCLA, but now there’s word that Stanford cornerback Wayne Lyons could be joining the Wolverines as a graduate transfer.
Lyons is a former 4-Star recruit who had been heavily recruited by Harbaugh’s staff before his departure for the 49ers. He started seven games for the Cardinal in 2014, registering 30 tackles (18 solo) and one forced fumble, and he played in all 14 games as a sophomore and a junior.
An architectural design major, Lyons was class valedictorian in High School and had the Stanford team’s highest GPA as a sophomore, a junior and senior. Michigan has a highly-regarded graduate program in Lyons’ chosen field, which may have contributed to his interest in a transfer. While Stanford coach David Shaw is never a fan of losing talented players before he has to, it sounds like he won’t stand in Lyons’ way if he really wants to leave:
“For those guys going into their fifth year that want the opportunity to play someplace else,” Shaw said, “I’ve never said no, never tried talk anybody out of it.”
Stanford added four highly-rated defensive backs on National Signing Day, while Michigan added just safety Tyree Kinnel and ATH Brian Cole, a WR/CB in high school who isn’t necessarily going to play defense for the Wolverines. 3-Star ATH commit Keith Washington is expected to play CB for Michigan, but he’s a long-term project unlikely to see the field in 2015.
