ANN ARBOR -- There's been no formal movement on the future of now former Florida interim head coach/defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, only speculation.

And a lot of that speculation has linked Durkin to Michigan, and new coach Jim Harbaugh.

Durkin served as Harbaugh's defensive line coach and special teams coordinator from 2007-09 at Stanford, and has been Florida's defensive coordinator over the past two seasons. He will not be retained by new Florida coach Jim McElwain, meaning he's now free to pursue other jobs.

Wherever he ends up, he'll apparently have a slew of recruits ready to take a look at his new school. And four-star 2015 linebacker Roquan Smith is one of those players.

Smith, the No. 46 player in 247sports.com's composite rankings, says if Durkin takes a job on Harbaugh's staff, he's immediately interested.

"My relationship with him is really good," said Smith, who was recruited heavily by Durkin at Florida. "I know he takes care of his players on and off the field, he's a great guy at heart.

"He's great at developing guys and doing all he can for them, I know that."

Smith says, right now, all he's heard is rumors. He hasn't spoken with Durkin about Michigan, and hasn't actually talked to the coach in two weeks.

As for Michigan, he says he's always had some interest there, but he never received a call from the previous staff.

"I've always wanted to take a visit up there, they've never really called, though," Smith said. "There was interest at one point, but they really didn't offer. I think they thought I was from the south, maybe I wouldn't come up and visit."
