Michigan football is expected to hire
Chip Lindsey as its new offensive coordinator, sources told Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Lindsey, whom ESPN reported Tuesday evening as the Wolverines' target, was North Carolina's OC and quarterbacks coach the last two seasons. He previously held the role at
UCF and
Auburn and was the head coach at Troy.
Lindsey comes to Ann Arbor to rejuvenate an offense that struggled in 2024 but that has a potential program-altering QB enrolling this month in No. 1 overall prospect Bryce Underwood.
In 2024, Michigan finished the regular season 128th out of 134 FBS teams in yards per game, 122nd in yards per play, 125th in first downs per game and 111th in points per game. The Wolverines only scored more than 30 points once, against Northwestern, and were held below 20 points six times, including all five of Michigan's losses. Michigan was 131st in plays of at least 10, 20 and 30 yards, and was last in the nation with just four plays of 40 yards or more.
While the Wolverines always want to lean on their physical ground game, especially under
Sherrone Moore, they threw for 80.1 fewer yards per game this season than last, on 0.3 more pass attempts per game. Be it No. 1 overall prospect
Bryce Underwood, a transfer portal quarterback or an incumbent player, Moore wants Michigan to be able to win with the pass game more next season.
"We want to be a balanced team," Moore said last week of what he wanted in an OC. "You've still got to be able to run the football. That's got to be a thing you do. But someone that's going to develop a quarterback at a high rate and put them in a great position. Sometimes we run it, sometimes we throw it. And the goal is to win, so we're doing everything we can to win, and try to put more trophies in the trophy case. So that's what we're going to do."
He continued: "Obviously, you got to be able to teach a young guy. Whether he starts day one, week two, year two, whatever it is, you got to develop them and you got to see the progress. But as far as what the offense will look like, that will take shape as we go."
Lindsey was hired at
North Carolina in December of 2022 offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. With more than 25 years of experience, Lindsey was described by the Tar Heels as "one of the nation's most innovative offensive minds and brings experience as a head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach."
North Carolina finished the 2024 regular season with the No. 21 offense in the nation, per SP+, and were 40th in SP+ in 2024 ahead of championship weekend.
With Lindsey in the fold, Sherrone Moore and Co. figure to be aggressive in the Transfer Portal this offseason. As Moore said Tuesday, "there's a lot of positions that we're adding depth," and he confirmed the Wolverines will be targeting a transfer QB.
"When I first got the job, the Transfer Portal was closed," Moore said. "So, it was just people trying to take our guys, and it was constant defense. Now we get to play a little offense, and we get to go out the Portal and get the right guys and the right fit for us. So, that's where it's advantaged us now, where we feel we can build the right people, get the right people."
