Michigan football is expected to hire Chip Lindsey as its new offensive coordinator, sources told Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Lindsey, whom ESPN reported Tuesday evening as the Wolverines' target, was North Carolina's OC and quarterbacks coach the last two seasons. He previously held the role at UCF and Auburn and was the head coach at Troy.

Lindsey comes to Ann Arbor to rejuvenate an offense that struggled in 2024 but that has a potential program-altering QB enrolling this month in No. 1 overall prospect Bryce Underwood.

In 2024, Michigan finished the regular season 128th out of 134 FBS teams in yards per game, 122nd in yards per play, 125th in first downs per game and 111th in points per game. The Wolverines only scored more than 30 points once, against Northwestern, and were held below 20 points six times, including all five of Michigan's losses. Michigan was 131st in plays of at least 10, 20 and 30 yards, and was last in the nation with just four plays of 40 yards or more.

While the Wolverines always want to lean on their physical ground game, especially under Sherrone Moore, they threw for 80.1 fewer yards per game this season than last, on 0.3 more pass attempts per game. Be it No. 1 overall prospect Bryce Underwood, a transfer portal quarterback or an incumbent player, Moore wants Michigan to be able to win with the pass game more next season.

"We want to be a balanced team," Moore said last week of what he wanted in an OC. "You've still got to be able to run the football. That's got to be a thing you do. But someone that's going to develop a quarterback at a high rate and put them in a great position. Sometimes we run it, sometimes we throw it. And the goal is to win, so we're doing everything we can to win, and try to put more trophies in the trophy case. So that's what we're going to do."

He continued: "Obviously, you got to be able to teach a young guy. Whether he starts day one, week two, year two, whatever it is, you got to develop them and you got to see the progress. But as far as what the offense will look like, that will take shape as we go."

Lindsey was hired at North Carolina in December of 2022 offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. With more than 25 years of experience, Lindsey was described by the Tar Heels as "one of the nation's most innovative offensive minds and brings experience as a head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach."

North Carolina finished the 2024 regular season with the No. 21 offense in the nation, per SP+, and were 40th in SP+ in 2024 ahead of championship weekend.

With Lindsey in the fold, Sherrone Moore and Co. figure to be aggressive in the Transfer Portal this offseason. As Moore said Tuesday, "there's a lot of positions that we're adding depth," and he confirmed the Wolverines will be targeting a transfer QB.

"When I first got the job, the Transfer Portal was closed," Moore said. "So, it was just people trying to take our guys, and it was constant defense. Now we get to play a little offense, and we get to go out the Portal and get the right guys and the right fit for us. So, that's where it's advantaged us now, where we feel we can build the right people, get the right people."

An average offense we in the CFP right now :dead: . Wink was at an disadvantage all year with that pathetic offense:scusthov:. That last paragraph is why I give Sherrone somewhat of pass Jim fukked us this year the timing was horrible

What are the takeaways?

  • He won't be around long. Never stayed at a spot as OC for more than 2 years. We get him for Bryce's tenure at most, and that's it.
  • I'm ignoring his Troy data. He was clearly a bad HC, but that's a very different job than OC and not what we're judging him on.
  • He's not a star, but he's solid. Never had an offense in the top 20 (with the caveat that I don't have 2018 Auburn info), but has had 2 in the top 30. He also has only between outside the top 55 once, his first season ever as an OC at Southern Miss.
  • Overall his teams seem to generally match the production level that has historically or recently been experienced at that school. Every so often you'll see large improvements (Auburn year 1, Southern Miss year 2). It's hard to extrapolate more than that since he never stays more than 2 years. But another sign of a good not great OC.
  • The two most relevant spots from a talent perspective to Michigan were UNC with Maye and Auburn. His only Auburn year with data, he was 26th. His 1 year with Maye, he was 21st. Those are his two best years. Bodes well for how he can do at Michigan which should have superior talent to those spots.
  • I'd argue his most recent year at UNC was good. 35th without Maye, and while losing their projected starting QB in game 1 for the year, is impressive. They had a great RB sure, but started Jacolby Criswell at QB. Michigan had great RB talent and bad QB play, look where we finished.
All in all, his tenure will be defined by the talent he has, specifically the talent surrounding Underwood. If we get good WRs, improved OL play, and a good bridge QB for year 1, we can compete nationally with Lindsey at OC. If we don't fill our obvious holes at WR/OL over the next few years (ideally next year), he'll still be better than Campbell, but that won't mean much.

basically he will produce if you give him a good QB, good weapons, and a tough oline ... his offense plays up/down to the level of talent he is given
