"Speight has won the QB battle and is the starter. O'Korn has won the backup position. Peters is fading. Dylan McCaffery would play in front of Peters if not for a redshirt."

From UMBIG11 on 24/7

That really really disappoints me. Particularly the part about Peters. :francis:

I honestly have no idea what to think of this season. So i'll just continue to talk mad shyt .. cause it's what i do. :yeshrug:

I don't think we're basing who we wanted to start, solely on the Spring Game. Everyone knows that Speight is an average, to BELOW average QB. We want to see what this offense can do with a QB that can make the throws necessary. :manny:

Members of the coaching staff said that Speight was the face of the team and a heisman candidate. Harbaugh providing general quotes about competition shouldn't have gotten fans riled up and set up to be disappointed

Contrary to what you believe, Harbaugh isn't perfect. I'm not saying he's making the wrong call on this (since he's the one with the kids day in and day out) .. but what i CAN say for certainty is this.

- Speight folds under pressure
- Just by watching film, both Peters AND O'Korn look like a more polished QB.
- Speight played INCREDIBLY bad in the games that mattered last year, and it tumbled over to this year (Spring game)
- The only coach that said Speight was the face of the team, was Pep Hamilton... and that's right after he got to A2.

Speight will be 24 years old this season. Do you really see much of an improvement? Can we all of a sudden teach an old dog new tricks?

Now I'm ok with Speight starting if that's who the staff wants to go with. The only issue I have is this is, If he starts playing poorly, does Harbaugh make the switch? Or if he's just not doing 'enough' to put teams away (ala Alex Smith) .. does he stay with Speight? Remember, Harbaugh didn't make the change to Colin K until Alex Smith got injured. No matter how average Smith was playing.

So does he make the change BEFORE we lose a game that we should win? (In essence taking us out of the NC conversation) Does he pull a guy mid game? (Although I cant remember him EVER doing that)

He benched Alex when the 49ers were 6-2, that's still incredibly ballsy. Speight was born Dec 1994 making his 22 years old for the entire season. I'm not going to blame Wilton Speight for hurting his collar bone, and having a coaching staff running their worst RB on scholarship as the bell cow. Be very clear that if De'Veon Smith could fall forward and gain two yards, we beat OSU, Iowa, FSU (and MSU in 2015). Newsome was a very good LT, and Mason Cole is going to be a star in the NFL at C. Newsome got hurt and Speight even faced a pass rush vs Rutgers. The OL depth wasn't ready to lose Newsome, and now the best C in the country has to play LT. The OL cant possibly be worse than last year but it's a mix of depth pieces and young guys thrown in the fire. We can afford zero injuries there. I don't see how one can see our losses on offense, and how last season went and not understand that Wilton Speight was the only option. I expect a comfortable win vs Florida and a win over the next 5 by at least 3 touchdowns. If this doesn't happen, then there can be talk.

Had to play Devin Smith because of his blocking ability unfortunately. Largely because as you said the line was very unathletic. fukking Hoke

I don't know why 24/7's message board posters were saying that he'd be 24 this season. My mistake for not checking.

Let me ask you something. Do you really believe that Speight was really THAT hurt? Because I'm almost 100% positive that while he DID get hurt, it wasn't nearly as bad as people made it seem to be. (Eddie McDoom's family pretty much confirmed this) If it was, he wouldn't have played the rest of the year. I honestly believe that the coaching staff played his injury worse than it was, to save him the backlash from the fan base, for his shytty showing at the end of the year.

I agree on the DeVeon points. Not so much on the Cole ones though. I've yet to see Cole get any kind of constant push. ESPECIALLY at LT. I think he's entirely too weak to be that successful in the NFL. I hope I'm wrong.

As for the bolded and underlined .. I agree with you. But sadly, I think we'll be talking. I feel like we'll win in spite of Speight. And if we lose .. I believe that it'll be because of him.

I think Speight will be fine this year it's his second year starting we need one of the receivers to step up and the oline to open some holes for the running backs

I hope you're right about Speight being fine. As for the receivers .. word is that our Freshman are already pushing dudes out. Crawford looks to be starting .. and it'll be with a freshman (DPJ or Tarik Black) .. and maybe both if we start out with 3 wide.. The wildcard is Perry. While he's been reinstated .. he's still not practicing with the ones. McDoom is getting passed up. Nate Johnson too. Moe Ways started off strong and has faded. Apparently, these freshman aint fukking around. And while Nico Collins and Oliver Martin didn't early enroll... they're playing great also. So I'm not too worried about the receivers believe it or not.

:leon: if what you say about the freshmen receivers are true they should be alright by mid season as far as everything else just trust the coaches that all we can do :manny:

Drake Harris, Ben Mason, Brad Hawkins switches
- With former wide receiver Drake Harris switching to defensive back, the roster move does not come as a surprise. Harris switching to defense has been confirmed by Harbaugh since the early days of summer.

- Like Harris, former linebacker Ben Mason's switch to fullback has been common knowledge since the summer. Harbaugh is pleased with the progress Mason has made in his new position and says that he is, "born to play fullback."

- Brad Hawkins, who played wide receiver in high school, has been switched to safety. Like the aforementioned Harris and Mason, the switch had been common knowledge.

Other notable position changes
For TMI's premium members, some other notable position changes should not come as a surprise. Sam Webb's 'Inside the Sub' coverage has outlined multiple position changes that have been confirmed with the roster release.

Here's a look at the other changes that are newsworthy:

- True freshman James Hudson has switched from the defensive line to the offensive line

- Sophomore Nate Johnson has switched from receiver to defensive back

- Redshirt junior Jared Wangler has switched from linebacker to fullback

A gut feeling on one roster member?
TMI was first to report that Nolan Ulizio was a serious candidate to start at right tackle this season. On Tuesday night, Sam Webb was first to report that Ulizio is expected to start at right tackle as well. Read his thoughts and 'gut feeling' about the situation, here (VIP).
