SDCC 2014: NEW CHARACTERS ANNOUNCED FOR SEASON 2 OF MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD
Lance Hunter and Daniel Whitehall come into the picture

Phil Coulson and company were left in a precarious position at the end of Season 1 of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. Former Agent Ward betrayed them all, and Hydra is everywhere. Coulson got promoted to Director of SHIELD and has been charged with rebuilding the team. Executive producers Jeff Bell, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jed Whedon were joined by cast members Clark Gregg (Coulson), Ming-Na Wen (May), Brett Dalton (Ward), Chloe Bennet (Skye), Elizabeth Henstridge (Simmons), and Iain De Caestecker (Fitz) on stage at Comic-Con to discuss Ward's betrayal and what's ahead.
Dalton said he was incredibly surprised to learn about his character's true feelings. When the executive producers came to see him to tell him about Ward's Hydra alliances, he thought he was going to be fired. He was okay with being turned into the villain instead. That development took the last half of Season 1 into a completely different direction, and the Hydra presence will continue to be the prevailing threat.
Though Marvel didn't say much about Season 2, they did mention the addition of a few new characters to the series. They confirmed Lucy Lawless will be joining next season as Isabelle Hartley. Tancharoen said the character is playing a long time SHIELD veteran who's tough and may have a knife that's always be her side. We'll be seeing her "pretty soon."
She's not the only fresh face. Lance Hunter, a member of the British force known as STRIKE, will come into the picture. He'll be played by newcomer Nick Blood. Yes, that's really his name. During a later interview, we learned Coulson has to recruit outside the box and that includes looking at other groups such as STRIKE.
Hydra is clearly the biggest threat the team faces in the first half of Season 2, and Daniel Whitehall is part of that. The Hydra agent will be portrayed by Reed Diamond.
No news on who or what Skye is, but Whedon said she's not going to like it.
