Looking at this and it reminds me of something Bill Simmons said about why comedians lose their fastball. His theory was that early on they are around other funny people and are trying to make them laugh while also getting legitimate feedback. Then when they finally break through and become famous they are surrounded by sycophants who will laugh rather something they say is funny or not.

I think I read that Steve Martin stopped doing standup because of this. After he really blew up, he said he couldn't tell if people were laughing because the jokes were funny or because he was Steve Martin.
