Looking at this and it reminds me of something Bill Simmons said about why comedians lose their fastball. His theory was that early on they are around other funny people and are trying to make them laugh while also getting legitimate feedback. Then when they finally break through and become famous they are surrounded by sycophants who will laugh rather something they say is funny or not.

When Joe was around R&M they were funny dudes (though not as funny as Joe) and also weren't complete kiss asses. In the old clips it looks where we get the funniest Joe moments it really seems like more than anything he's trying to get R&M to laugh by any means which brought out his creativity. With the new crew none are actually funny (minus Flip depending on taste) and they will all laugh at anything Joe says. That leads to Joe not being as creative or having to reach as hard for the laughs.
