Let me add, people are not being real if they don’t admit that consumers prefer rap everytime this convo is brought up

Rap made male R&B a niche genre

Joe is 🧢 about Tank. He doesn’t make good albums and no one is playing that
People like Tank are mad annoying the way they lobby for themselves too, yes you've got a great voice but you can't recycle the same shyt for 20+ years and ask stupid questions like why are those guys moving units and not me? RnB is no different from any other genre in that people want new and fresh sounds more than anything. This is probably also the reason to why someone with a unique voice and dope writing skills, but who really can't sing, will get hyped for the music but laughed at for the performance. Because the labels sign complete artists--as far as being able to put out interesting music--instead of developing and getting great songs for great singers to sing.

I don't really listen to much modern r&b outside of a couple artists. Why do you think male r&b is dead? Everything comes back around eventually but is this something that will be dead for years longer, or is it just waiting on the perfect artist. Then again maybe the perfect artists have already come and the problem is they're rappers (Drake). Sort of like that theory that because boxing isn't popular anymore, kids who would have been heavyweight contenders 40 years ago become football players instead, thus keeping boxing dead/reduced.
I think the 14-25 year olds that are responsible for making artist hot prefer rappers It’s been this way since the mid 90s, this is just the results of decades of listener habits

The boxing parallel is spot on. I think it’s weird that Rod Wave is considered a rapper when he’s singing on a majority of his album but he’s rapping on some of the verses but I think it’s by design that he’s situated himself to be looked at as rapper

Another thing that hurt R&B that somewhere in the early 10s rappers stop using singers on hooks for their mainstream attempts at crossing over. That was the stimulus package for singers in the 00s

Yeah I can’t take Tank serious, he’s built a fanbase and brands over decades. Even if male R&B was a big deal right now he wouldn’t have any traction with the kids

Joe last week when Ish says he reads through comments for constructive criticism: "aint nobody paying attention to that bullshyt. Fuk dem niccas"

Joe this week when Ish bring up the same point, only this time Joey Badass is in the room: "Yeah as an artist you gotta pay attention anytime more than a few people start saying something"

And I wonder who called Joe to tell him Khalid has made his label 9 figures. That's pretty wild. He's actually one of my favorite R&B artist of today that rarely gets play in the "urban" world for whatever reason so he gets classified in that poppy lane just cuz he'll jump on some shyt with Billie English or Marshmello.

That mf got mad traditional R&B hits that should have more traction with a certain demo. Guess he don't look the par or something cuz like Joey B said, there's almost nobody around me who would mention Khalid in R&B convos.....

Khalid is interesting in that he is one of the few Black artists who would be an example of reverse "crossover". He caught on with pop and mainstream audiences first as opposed to R&B audiences. His music is pretty good too, but because he didn't come up the "normal" way his work is ignored in the community.

I mean, the man has videos that has 270 million views on Youtube. One that has 814 m's. And it's not the generic toxic b.s. or over a trap beat wave that most of the new guys try to ride.

You can't listen to his music and tell me it's not R&B....so imagine if he was actually the face or male r&b at least or r&b in general with the sales and etc he's generating. Nobody would be saying R&B is dead.

Some of his music has a pop slant to it yeah, to be more digestible bit it's R&B through and through. You're right tho. He started off big in the pop culture world somehow and no matter if he's doing songs with 6lack, Ty Dolla Sign or Ari Lennox, he gets no love on most black networks, radio, podcasts or forums (including here).

let’s face it, he only isn’t embraced by those that just wanna hear about bytches, hoes and all kinda toxic shyt.

Khalid makes beautiful music to listen to at any setting.
This alone instead of the bytches and hoes content makes him wayyy more accessible to a larger audience.

I’ve played his music for so many people and never had to think “oh, this is too vulgar for this setting. I gotta play sumn else” which I do with most current r&b.

At the same time I never thought of him not bein an R&B artist

All these are good artist, none of them are mainstream except Weeknd but he’s old and he had a brutal flop

Free Spirit? Because that sold a little over 200,000 first week with almost 90k of that being pure sales. Or are you talking about the lil EP he through out there, "Scenic Drive"? We counting that? I mean I guess that goes back to Joe's point of r&b artists resorting to the mini packs. I think if he puts out another full length joint, it would do a little more than that.

Good point. There's been a lot of times, I put Tidal on, which their algorithm is usually on point if I choose 1 song and let it rock, but with R&B I'm bout to here some crass (I'm getting too old lol) shyt that is awkward as fuk depending on who's in the whip.

I fukked with Saint Jhn's 1st album real heavy. Haven't checked much after that. Ive been messing with Blxst for awhile and it seems like he's finally starting to get some recognition. Had him a placement on the new CB album.

6lack is cool but I can only listen to him here and there.

I honestly can't really think of much though. Not "new" and not "in the same lane" as Khalid to a degree. R&B very well may be "injured" indeed

Lowkey, I dont know who throwing alleys at Ish but he's made me go check some shyt out. Just gotta go back and check my Playlist for it.

Free spirit came out 3 years ago.

Scenic drive had 9 songs on it and was pushed

What Male Toxic R&B is embraced?
