Hamas offered to lay down their arms, surrender and release all the hostages in return for an end to the war for Gaza to start the rebuilding process, but Netanyahu rejected them outright. It was a very reasonable deal and the families of the hostages have been protesting for Netanyahu to accept.
Anyone telling you that all Hamas needs to do is release the hostages is bold faced lying to you, and they know it. Israel does not care about the hostages, and they have made that clear. It's just disgusting genocide apologia.
You could hardly even consider this damage control. They couldn't even commit to advising the president on a cease fire. I can't see how saying, "yeah he shouldn't have done all of the things he did," while still refusing to make any changes will do anything but make sentiments worse. There's no way the Dearborn officials left there feeling better about the situation.
