You don't have to to use iTunes

But if you want to, itune converts it for you

Just right click on the song and you'll be given the option

If I want to put them on my phone i do. I only got 5 because I didn't feel like doing all of em

you dont need AAC to sync with your iOS device

they play mp3s

iTunes should convert your files, if not then get a free audio converter

are your files in a different format?

Yea they are. It plays fine but I wanted them on my phone and it won't transfer them

I can do it with mine but the only smart device I have is the ecobee. I've been able to directly control it from the day I got it.
