I'm not a fan of the Grammys but if you look at the winners of the best rap album category, most of them are great albums with a good amount of classics too. And those I don't like personally are still huge commercial success so there's atleast a logic behind their wins.

1996 : Poverty's Paradise
1997 : The Score
1998 : No Way Out
1999 : Vol 2... Hard Knock Life
2000 : The Slim Shady LP
2001 : The Marshall Mathers LP
2002 : Stankonia
2003 : The Eminem Show
2004 : Speakerboxxx/The Love Below
2005 : The College Dropout
2006 : Late Registration
2007 : Release Therapy
2008 : Graduation
2009 : Tha Carter III
2010 : Relapse
2011 : Recovery
2012 : My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2013 : Take Care
2014 : The Marshall Mather LP II
2015 : The Heist
2016 : To Pimp A Butterfly
2017 : Coloring Book
2018 : DAMN.
2019 : Invasion Of Privacy
2020 : Igor

The real negative thing I'll point out is that they rely way to much on Kanye or Eminem.

Esquire says that Jay Electronica deserves to win Best Rap Album but that Nas will win.

Best rap album

Who should win?
Jay Electronica finally released a debut album eleven years into his career. Royce Da 5'9 followed up a tough act with another one. Freddie Gibbs and The Alchemist let their experimental efforts shine while mainstream artists held back releases. And D Smoke came up, seemingly out of nowhere, with a 16-track masterpiece. They should all win this one. Breaking the tie using personal favourites though, I hope it goes to Jay Electronica for A Written Testimony. It might motivate him to release his next project before the turn of the century.

Who will win?
They're going to give it to Nas, aren't they?

The GRAMMYs 2021 are almost here. These are our predictions.

Keystone Keynote Predicts Roddy Rich for Best Melodic Rap Performance

BEST MELODIC RAP PERFORMANCE – award for the rap/sung performance, not really the song

Unlike the previous category, this one is easier to predict as they tend to go with both successful and quality songs, both qualifiers included. As such, Roddy Rich’s “The Box” seems to be the obvious choice with both its viral quality and its being a standout track. However, don’t count out Drake’s Lil Durk-assisted “Laugh Now Cry Later,” which was also very successful and critics noted that this song was one of Drake’s better tracks in recent years.

Nas now holds the record for longest span of Best Rap Album nominations (22 years)

Nas is nominated for best rap album. He was nominated in that category back in the ‘90s, wasn’t he?

He was. Nas was first nominated for best rap album in the 1999 awards year for I Am…, which allows him to set a new record for the longest span of best rap album nominations (22 years). He swipes the title from Jay-Z, who was first nominated in 1998 (Vol. 2..Hard Knock Life) and was nominated most recently in 2017 with 4:44 (a 20-year span). Nas’ nominated album this year is King’s Disease.

I really think that if Nas doesn’t win, it’ll be a stunner that goes against unwritten Grammy rules. He’s the vet, he has way more industry contacts than the other nominees, major Grammy voters want him to win, etc. The thing I wonder about...is whether there will be a backlash driven by people upset about the Kelis thing who want to make a point. I’ve been asking around about this, talking to voters. I haven’t heard anything to suggest this is bubbling.
