FIA is stuck really. If Redbull went 5% over budget they clearly used an unfair advantage to win the championship and get their WCC points.

This isn't 1/2% where you can argue. Also what does RedBull say? How come the other teams were able to meet their target but them?
Sounds like they were cooking the books by shuffling personnel to different Red Bull branches/departments so they wouldn't count under F1 budget. Red Bull is saying it's an accounting issue and even if they're at fault that they only exceeded the budget marginally.

Helmut Marko talking about it
What is and what is not covered by the budget ceiling? Red Bull says it does not have those numbers itself yet. "The process is just like a tax audit. We have different companies [that come under Red Bull] and not all of them work for Formula 1. Some people have been transferred to another branch and you can't carry those costs, from our point of view in any case not." Those are interesting words, which fit with what Horner said on Friday about different interpretations of the rules. Marko alludes that Red Bull does not associate certain costs with F1 and has therefore not given up, while the FIA looks at it differently. It also fits with the 'clarifications' that have come, according to Horner.

"We are now talking with the FIA about various points. It mainly concerns the calculation of things. I cannot go into details now, but that is about, for example, which people you should or should not include. With our calculations we are below the limit of the budget cap. If these things work out against us, we will marginally exceed them,"

A fine doesn't cut it. The big teams can then factor that into the equation based on precedent and break the rules and pay the fine.

You disqualify them for last year and Lewis gets his 8th title in the worse possible way and you piss off Max's Nazi followers.
We still don't know by how much they exceeded the budget but I think there's a zero point zero percent chance that RB will face disqualification or any serious repercussions. What's going to happen is FIA will use this to 'clarify' the rules and then let everyone know that whoever does this NEXT time will get the book thrown at them :beli:

This is typical, "let's do what we have to for the win, even if it's illegal" from Red Bull, they know it's difficult to take a win or a title away after the fact. They did it in Abu Dhabi last year, and now we find out, budget wise they were literally doing it all year. Criminal.

Rock and a hard place really. But Ferrari, Mclaren and Williams have been talking about this before Mercedes said anything. Let's see what happens Wednesday.
Bro. They just fined Lewis 20k for a nose ringā€¦FIA is not a legitimate governing body. Itā€™s no longer about fair and equitable interpretation and enforcement of rules.

When you cheat in track and field they will remove your wins and or medals. It can and should be done but it won't. A fine is totally useless.

Di Resta talking sense for one of the few times. FIA should have had this underway. Now we're in for the inevitable Latifi throwing it into the wall, causing a red flag, and the race timing out.
