My big problem with Mercedes is that they never go for it.Bad strategy on Leclerc's side of the garage, bad strategy by Merc. When they get it wrong it seems to be that they're relying on massive tire deg in the late stages of the race. Hindsight is 20/20, but they probably didn't extend that stint long enough. Vettel had just caught traffic and no outlap was going to close 8 seconds.
Wolff isn't making those strategy calls, it's James Vowels I believe. Some days they just get it plain wrong and today was one of those days. When they saw Vettel put in a mid to low 45 when Hamilton and Leclerc were putting in high 47s, they should have boxed regardless of what Leclerc did. Track position was going to be more valuable than several laps fresher tires. What the hellwas Wolff thinking leaving Hamilton out so long after Leclerc pitted?
