They say because Xavi endorsed Victor Font prior to Laporta announcing he was going to run (which was kinda last minute iirc) when Font was the favourite to win even tho Xavi has since distanced himself from Font it's out there no taking it back. Laporta knows the socios know this and doesn't want to look weak in front of them by going with Xavi even if it does make sense for everyone. I think that's why Xavi signed that new contract to let some time pass post elections.
