No matter how shyt he plays he can't be taken off, because by giving him that absurd contract and affording him sway within United's upper infrastructure, he's inexorably tied Rooney's fate to that of the club. Rooney's position at the club is now more secure than Moyes or any manager that might replace him which is insane when you consider how "loyal" he's been.
Rooney is not going to get better between now and 2019 and because he doesn't have a well defined and disciplined identity as a player he disrupts the structure of the team if he isn't held in check by a strong manager.
If United had a strong enough corralling force in the middle (i.e. not Carrick/what Scholes used to be) it wouldn't matter so much because the shape and tempo of the side would be dictated by a naturally deep lying player.
