What's stopping you? In my case it's not difficult at all to head to the islands but I find that if you really want to go somewhere you can make it happened

It's various things, mostly mental. Let's say that I grew up there and I couldn't recognize it when I went back last time, it has changed A LOT due to various rebellions and uprisings. Most people I knew there have left, family members I was closest to are dead, moms is dead, house used to be full of life and now it's empty. And that was 10 years ago, was quite hard even at that moment to go "back" to something that is now totally different, and you don't know anyone anymore. Even my Pops isn't living there anymore. Plus let's say I have a complicated personal relationship with the country, I can't be anonymous over there because I have people in my fam who are highly ranked, yet I feel out of place as I don't speak the language (you know the whole "You're not a real one" thing). Hurts to be a stranger in the place you actually grew up And it's not one of those countries you can just go and "do you" without minding people. And obviously the fact that we're still dealing with the aftermath of the 2013 crisis, random killings still happening

But you're right, if I really want to go I can just get a plane ticket and go, but yeah basically it won't be an "easy" trip. Much more easier for me to go top any random country I don't know and be an anonymous stranger.

visiting family in the islands will always precede any other vacations plus summer jobs

I'm an attorney by trade but currently doing strategy consulting in emerging markets. Basically helping outside investors jump into African companies. For the investors, I have to create proper business entities to invest and get their dividends out, and for the company, I work with a team that helps improve the inefficiencies within the company.


My goal is to one day start or be part of a fund ran by African Americans investing in Africa and gettting people to come back and transfer skills/knowledge to the people here.
