It's funny you mention this because just today I ran into an old classmate from middle school. She's half Nigerian and she was talking about how she wanted to hit up Lagos so badly this December, she hadn't been since like 2011. She also mentioned that one of our mutual friends went to Lagos this past December and had a ball. Was talking to another friend from college who finally went to Nigeria this past December by herself (stayed with friends) and she said the 3 weeks were crazy.
It's like in the past couple years West Africa (Ghana and Nigeria especially) have been the places to be. Even people who aren't even directly related have been flocking en masse. Crazy to think that some years back people weren't even claiming to be Nigerian and the like, now everyone wants to be out on the scene.
On a serious note, I wonder what drove this renewed interest in African travel, particularly in December
My theory is the Nigerians and Ghanaians that studied abroad (like myself) always made it a habit to come home for Christmas. For us, it was like a 2-3 week reunion to catch up with old friends. From there, word spread back to the diaspora and the social circles surrounding it. From there, it became a thing.
Honestly, I think continent wide, December is just the move. My boy down in Nairobi told me December is the best time to come down as well. I'm hearing South Africa in December is also a scene.
So many experiences I want, so little time
I just came back from my grandfather's funeral in Ghana a few days ago. And man i can't tell you the amount of AAs and Carribeans travelling in groups i've already encountered particularly this year. And it's not even December yet when shyt really gets down.
The problem is that despite all these travellers coming, the tourism industry clearly need a lot of work when it comes to quality and maintenance.
I can see Africa is increasingly becoming the wave for black diaspora travellers beyond existing African communities. It's a slow process but it's building up year by year.
