Note: I traveled a lot as a kid since my father was in the military (Germany, Alaska, 4 different states).

But as an adult, I have never traveled outside the United States for recreation (or any other reason).
Bruh post this pandemic I’m never taking a single day for granted

Definitely getting way more stamps on the passport. One life we don’t get to do this again.

YEP - we are definitely looking at property in Mexico
this pandemic got real estate dirt cheap
looking at 1100 square foot one bedroom condo in the local part of Cozumel to buy and renovate
if the numbers run in our favor with the reno it may cost a little more than the wife's VW atlas .
we already got a broker and a lawyer on it.
( this is definitely not ocean front, about 2 miles back where the locals live)
there is a huge expat population (30k out of 100k) on the island but after discussing it with the wife , we live around enough cacs now to have enough sense not buy property in whole other country and live around them.
we may rent it out, but he pandemic has got the wife on this germaphobe wave.
the area where we are looking at its best to know "un Poco" Espanyol.

property taxes, utilities would be less than 2 months of our electric bill .
internet would be our most expensive bill other than food. and we would only pay for it when we are there.

pandemic changed our whole outlook
actually the change happened after i had some health issues , but this pandemic just pushed us over the edge
you wake up everyday and you do not know what's going to actually happen , so make the most out of whatever time you got left.

we thought about Belize , Roatan Honduras, Bahamas, costa Rica, st marteen.
but either they did not have the infrastructure and the Euro controlled island are expensive

Mexico just checked off most of our list of what we want
plus the locals in the south consider themselves "brown" and think when others cross the border they become coconuts - brown on the outside, white on the inside.
we have been going since 2007 and have a lot of friends down there, locals and expats, business owners, etc.
and there is a large African American expat population in Merida about 2 hours from where we are.
but we fell in love with COZ on a cruise and never looked back.

How do you travel safely alone?

Planning a trip in a few months (still not sure where) but now I’m starting to think about it

-Where do you keep important documents like your passport? Do you have to carry it on you at all times, what is your ID then if you’re in a foreign country?

-What about money as well? Can you use an American bank in a foreign country like that?

-What happens if you lose your passport/wallet/etc and are left with no identification or money in a foreign country?

-What if you literally know no one in the area? How can you stay safe? Considering people kidnap tourists and stuff

Your visa and amex car works all over the world, you dont even need to convert your money and if you have a credit union or a good bank they wont charge you extra to pull from an ATM. Just go to a ATM at a bank or int he airport when you land and pull out the amount you want in that countries currency.

Its a good idea to have a conversion app or know the exchange rate so you can know how much you need to pull out. Alot of these countries prefer cash over credit and if you use your card they will ask you to enter your secure pin number on your chip.

If you want to meet people in these countries, facebook has tons of travel groups for black people or american in general. You can stay at a hostel if you are in europe and you will be guaranteed to meet some people there, meetup is another option. Just going out to social venues could have you link up with people.

Safety concerns are so OVERRATED coming from american of all people, Ive said it before but dont nobody want you lol. These "kidnappings" are so over stated, you stay safe abroad the same way you stay safe in america. Now some places in Africa might be a little different, For the most part in the big touristy places, like Cape town, ghana egypt.. etc. you are good, eeverywhere else you might want to move like you are in a sketchy neighborhood in the US. Europe and asia are safe as fukk

Yeah if you are traveling to a first or second world country there’s no need to even get paper currency unless it’s a country that even accepts tips (in cash). Most dont and it’s frowned upon to actually give a tip so research that. In Japan we brought about $500 in yen and came back with $200 because our card worked literally everywhere even the vending machines.

Thanks for the help breh

I was thinking of visiting some places in Africa to start off, maybe start off with those lil French islands like Reunion. They seem like chill spots

What are some places off the beaten path that y'all have been to domestically? Looking at going to Big Bear or Taos, NM. My go to's are Pueblo or Idaho Springs in Colorado, Muscle Shoals, AL & Chattanooga, TN when I lived in Bama. Any recommendations are highly appreciated
