Old Elbe Tunnel Hamburg, Germany
The landmarked St. Pauli Elbe tunnel has been connecting the “Landungsbrücken“, the jetties, with the harbour area in Steinwerder for 100 years. It is a landmark of the city and represents engineering art because it was the first tunnel under a river on the European continent. Ten years ago, the access buildings on both sides of the river Elbe were refurbished, and it is now the turn of the eastern of the two 426-meter long tunnel tubes, at a depth of about 25 meters.
