Alright yall, needed a good horror fix so I've been flying through some of the new stuff mentioned in the thread. Some quick impressions.

Freaky had some wild opening kills and some good comedy. It's Freaky Friday + Friday the 13th...kinda genius as a concept. What it actually becomes is one part coming of age for a bullied teenager story and one part revenge fantasy against those bullies. I feel like this woulda bodied in movie theaters with a younger demographic...no ageism but it's more of a fun popcorn movie than something that I'll be revisiting often.

That said, it made a damned fine popcorn movie. That's not a bad thing, in fact, I kinda wish they'd have given it more run time. You can tell the writers put thought (probably a good deal of their own experiences) into these characters. But I really think with as much fun as Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton were obviously having in their roles, you coulda added a bit more run time to let them characterize the roles even more.

Dead End was a dark one. It managed to take a predictable path and throw in so much crazy, that you never got bored. I mean this in the best way...every character and plot point feels like a trope but then behaves in such a bizarre manner that the whole thing takes on an uncanny feeling. I think it's hard as hell to do "uncanny" without it coming off forced. But this one nails it even before the horror starts with a Jingle Bells sing along.

Everyone's behavior is just a smidge off. They all do well but Lin Shaye is the queen of this, it's why I love damn near everything she does.. even the Midnight Man. Anyway, Dead End gets a ton of authentic performances that are crucial because so much occurs off screen. I actually think it would have hurt the movie to have budget to show us more. Nothing is shown; it all relies on timing, cuts and reactions...but it landed for me.

:salute::salute::salute:for Lin Shaye and the madness.

After watching that one clip from Anna and the Apocalypse, I also had to check that one out too. I enjoyed the dry sense of humor through about 2/3's of the movie. It went for a legitimate blend of Shaun of the Dead with Highschool Musical. That works pretty damned well when it's going for comedy but it also makes the serious turns a little too jarring. I also felt like where Shaun managed to mix the jokes into the serious parts, Anna and the Apocalypse split them up almost entirely.

Anyway, the wildest thing to me is that I thought the music had way more ear worms than even a Sweeney Todd. I hit my sister up that digs the Pitch Perfect movies and told her to give this joint a look. No such thing as a Hollywood ending is a banger yall...don't at me. Anyway, it wound up scoring more of a "not bad" for me but I can absolutely see there being an audience for this.

Next up, I'ma check Followed and The Call. I'm also gonna give this new Shudder joint A Good Woman is Hard to Find a look. Trying to keep some of the more Christmas themed stuff off until the NYC contingent of this thread is snowed in over the next couple of days. I'ma pick up some homemade pasteles and coquito from my mom and sisters, then sit down to Joe Bob's Christmas, A Christmas Horror Story and Rare Exports for sure. Might throw-in Krampus while I'm at it.

Lin Shaye and Ray Wise were perfection in that movie.

Watched Jack Frost (the horror one) over the weekend...the fukkery was off the charts!:pachaha:
Is that the movie where Frosty uses his “carrot in the wrong places”? When the lady is taking a bath or something
:picard:
If that’s the same one - then that one is on my permanent never watch again category. That was too much for me.
