They don’t know shyt:russ: nobody does. We know a title and the main cast. That’s it.

This the plan. They don’t want anything to leak and if it does leak, chances are it’s bullshyt

A few days away from the 2020 Castle Freak dropping. I watched Castle Freak recently and that movie is absolutely bonkers.

A blind protagonist could give 'em a chance to have more interactions with the Freak, but this film also seems to go for something more grand than the original which felt localized to me at least. This one goes full Cthulu mythos and the old ones based on the trailer.

Another one that dropped on a streaming service I didn't know about until today (Arrow) is called The Bloodhound. It's got an interesting trailer to say the least and it's inspired by one of Poe's better known stories, The Fall of the House of Usher.

So this looks really good, but recent "reimaginings" of gothic literature have been disappointing to me. Then again, I think the choice of source material has been a problem. We've got like ten versions of the Turning of the Screw and the one that went Romance over Horror is the only half-decent one (I am the pretty thing that lives in the house was trash to me, though some liked that one too). Poe's work is loaded with visuals and ideas that SHOULD be workable though.

House of Usher is a REALLY good premise to work off of. Without spoiling too much, it's narrator goes to visit a friend who has gotten sick. The friend has a twin sister who's also ill and passes away. The narrator and friend don't want the body examined by medical interests, so they put it into a family tomb...and then things get weird. It's a short story, it's well worth your time and it can fit into a modern narrative so I'm hopeful about this flick.

Some other Poe work that really ought to be revisited over Turning of the Screw and poorly executed Lovecraft:

The Masque of the Red Death is timely as ever during this pandemic. It's about a king and his noble friends quarantining in what's essentially a "bubble" to party while a plague rips through his land. The rich ignore the problems outside and just party. There's this really dope effect in the short story, where a band plays music for everyone to dance to non-stop except for when an old grandfather clock strikes. That's the only time the hall is quiet and everybody has to face reality in that silence for just a few dings...it has stuck with me since my first time reading the story.

The Pit and the Pendulum is ripe to turn into a mystery where the crimes of the prisoner actually get explained. The most famous bit of this one is the blade swinging down toward the tied up prisoner but there are some other facets to the story that could really be built on. The prisoner tries to examine the prison and the blade is just one of the experiences in the pit. You could also circle in other Poe classics if you make the narrator guilty and unreliable (Tell-Tale Heart and the Cask of Amontillado).

You also flip Murders at Rue Morgue a bit to make a more satisfying conclusion. This ish probably inspired detective characters going forward (Sherlock included). It just has a really weird resolution at the end that I don't think would work, so they'd have to do a "loosely inspired by" version. But that means they could keep the detective work, keep the grizzly crimes and work in more horror.

I hope they have a really good explanation that makes the sleeping bag wrestling scene in The Bloodhound trailer make sense. Because that shyt looks absurd.

Ok I see where this is heading. I put up the article to show that the movie isn’t coming out until 2022 so ANY discussions or assumptions about said movie would be premature. No one can predict which characters die or who will be killed off. Not at this time.

:russ: I got mad at that being in there. Just gonna tell myself it's probably some reach to set up a "if you're here then who's in the sleeping bag!?" moment.

I suspended my disbelief for two Creep movies though. I'll see what these dudes have got.

I watched Braid, not sure how I missed it on release because it's up my alley with the artsy, indy feel and deep allegories. That said...I've got a love/hate relationship with it.

So Braid is about two women who are on the run after committing a heist and they hide out at a mentally ill friend's home. The mentally ill friend's rule for staying at the home is that the girls have to partake in a game which basically comes down to playing pretend like when we were children...but with all the experience, wants, needs and past trauma of adulthood informing the imaginary world.

The concept is kinda incredible to me. You have three ego's colliding to create an imagined world, perspective switches completely change the visuals and feelings around a scene. It's all dream-like and we ambiguous about what's real or not real (although some stuff is very clearly imagined and it's possible all of it is). But I've made complaints about too much ambiguity in the past and I think this runs into that. It's hard enough dissecting a movie with one unreliable narrator; this one gives you three unreliable narrators and jumps around their perspectives in disorienting fashion. On a surface level, it could feel nonsensical at points or pretentious even if you do mine it for coherence.

The good...the visuals. The dream-like sequences and colors lend to some absolute stand out visual moments. The concept itself is enough to really make you reflect on how different perspectives shape/create the world around us. I wouldn't deem it scary, but there are some pretty creepy vibes and sequences. The actresses do well in really tricky performances too. There's a LOT to explore if you enjoy the film. I could probably take three laps and focus on one character study at a time. This was a clear labor of love whether or not the messages land with you.

Overall...I'd rate it worth a watch for being incredibly unique and visually appealing. I didn't score it high for horror and the story is a mixed bag. But it's the type of flick that will stick with you a while and make you think about what was conveyed if you let it's manic energy absorb you.
