A Villa Straylight.
@Daredevil - I thought that I was all set to watch Black Christmas but the copy was actually the original 2000s remake. That’s what I get for relying on a non- horror fan “hood electronic
copy” sent to me, instead of just going to the theatre .
:francis:
You should probably see it in the theaters I'd you can.

I liked it
This was good. I went into it with no expectations. Good story. Benicio’s acting is a little monotone but that worked for this because it was such a dark depressing movie. Werewolf movies>>> Vampires. This movie had a few unexpected twists. Those kill scenes with the werewolf were brutal.

Alright yall, I've got a confession. I think Robert Eggers is incredibly talented, his cinematography is top tier to me and he draws out incredible performances (especially considering the propensity for period piece accuracy in his work)...but man...I didn't really enjoy the Witch like that and I was even less into the Lighthouse. They're both REALLY fun to reflect on in retrospect but I was mostly bored by both movies and spent too much focus deciphering the language to be fully drawn into the haunting imagery.

Both movies also do this weird thing where dreams and reality are blended too closely to figure out wtf is real but I mean at all times. I love deciphering a good plot but I feel like these hit the point of being too ambiguous. This symbolism is all great but combine unreliable narration, heavy symbolism, seemingly real mysticism and an attempt to ground these stories in reality (period pieces and the Lighthouse is inspired loosely by a true story)...I can literally create any fanfic narrative I want to blend these elements.

Fam, I was an English major. I LOVE playing games where you pull pieces from a narrative to construct your own points and conclusions. But I really feel like both the Witch and the Lighthouse are overplaying that card. I could give a bunch of explanations for the seagull and the one eyed head. My favorite would be as a symbol of Oden the one-eyed raven. Oden gave up his eye as a sacrifice to attain knowledge. I think that ties really nicely to the one eyed seagull, the one eyed head and then the closing image...but Eggers says it was more a Prometheus thing to be fair...and that works just as well :manny:.

Props for the list. I haven't watched any of the rest but I vouch for the bolded. Ready of Not was one of my favorite movies of the year, fun as all hell. Scary Stories does a good job of aiming to work for a broader audience without falling to the usual lazy writing that comes with that (as in "let's just put a bunch of jump scares in and call it a day"). I'm biased though because I loved the Scary Stories books growing up.

I’ve heard good things about both of those. I’m honestly more interested in the scary stories movie than Ready or Not. Most because I have this feeling that the latter is going to be a Youre Next rehash without doing much more, but I will reserve any thoughts until I see it. It’s made by Radio Silence - will they follow the other very promising mumblegore directors by dropping a crappy breakout movie after showing lots of promise in their indie fields? (Like Wingard, Takal, Swanberg, Evans, Bruckner)

I think I liked The Lighthouse just because it was so fukking weird.

Wasn't a fan of The Witch though. That movie was boring as all hell.

No comment because I don't want to mess with your frame of mind going in. I'm a fan of Radio Silence too (if people bring up anthologies, I go right for Southbound). I'll definitely want to hear your thoughts on Ready or Not fam.

I can def give the Lighthouse that props. It was super weird in a way that kept me at least intrigued the whole way through. The Witch was way too much build-up without the type of hooks I'd have needed to stay attentive. I wonder if I'll like an Eggers movie more when I don't have so much trouble following the dialogue. Got me leaning up in my chair as if being closer to the screen would help me decipher the accents and jargon.
