Gallows Hill (2013) - IMDb

Gallows Hill or the Damned

Slight spoilers...A family crashes their car in a rainstorm and winds up in a house with a weirdo old man. They discover a girl locked up in his basement and free her...but the old man isn't so much angry as horrified and all hell breaks loose from here.

It does some things well, you get to know every character and relationship before the horror kicks in so there's at least some investment. There's one truly high quality scene that involves an impromptu interview and the questions asked. Once the action starts, they keep it going all the way through and they do a good job of slowly revealing the rules for this universe and survival. All that said it just wasn't scary. The lack of downtime means they don't build tension, it's just a lot of running and the actual rules of this universe are kinda lame. It feels like maybe they cut a lot, because early on they leave some good story beats but the constant action means they don't get fully explored and just get blown past. Movie has all the groundwork to make a fascinating psychological horror but went more fast paced, action horror after the initial act. It's on netflix, I don't think it's all that worth watching but if you've got nothing else and fiend for a horror movie; it'll pass the time and it is a legit attempt at horror at least.

Audition, Ginger Snaps, Psycho 2 and Prowler feel like fairly known movies in horror circles to me but all worth a look for those who haven't seen for sure. Innkeepers was like an indy romantic comedy until the last ten minutes. Pontypool though...that's a slept on one that I REALLY liked, it's not a zombie plague where you get infected by being bitten. Instead these people at a radio station are getting calls from people describing the infection as it starts, spreads and escalates while the broadcasters try to figure out WTF is causing the infections and whether they can stay away from both the infected people and becoming one. It was on Netflix a long time ago, not sure if it still is but I REALLY liked it.

I've seen all of those.
THat guy should have probably come up with some more obscure choices if he was gonna make a video about horror flicks that people probably haven't seen.

A couple off top, probably not SUPER obscure:

Perkins’ 14
The Burning
When A Stranger Calls Back
Body
Behind The Mask (probably pretty well known in horror circles, but it’s top 5 all time for me)
The House Of The Devil
