2015 - RT 90% IMDB 7.1

This has been on my Netflix list for years. Every time I hovered over it the clips would start with David Arquette and it just made me move on. But I finally pulled the trigger and I’m glad I did. Thankfully David has small role. It’s a slow burn western with a horror twist. Great job by Kurt, the always reliable Patrick Wilson and even Matthew Fox was decent. I think the slow pace really works well because when it got heavy it took me aback at how viscerally violent and frankly disturbing this got. I’m sure most have seen this one already but yeah if you haven’t, go watch. It’s an extremely straightforward film but it’s stayed with me since I watched it.

8/10

After seeing Rafe Spall put in a dreadful performance in the new Jurassic World I was a little gun shy about this but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this. The emotional hook of the group of friends travelling to honor their dead friend really worked for me. The self loathing, the mistrust and tension over the death added a lot. I have a fear of being in the woods at night (when I was 8 I got lost in the woods on a camping trip and spent a night alone, terrified of every sound)and unlike something like Blair witch where it’s too much shaky cam to utilize the location this one was I thought quite beautifully filmed and really twisted every ounce of horror from its setting. The first hour is all set up and I thought it was fantastic. I had a feeling though the 3rd act was going to make or break the film and for me it worked but I wouldn’t be surprised if others it did not. I don’t think there much denying how well the first hour work for any horror fan though.

I was worried it was going to lead to nothing or it would have the lead character just be insane and killing them but the witchcraft and monster reveal worked for me.

I LOVED the design of the creature. Something straight out of lovecraft or a boss in bloodborne.

I was shocked to see the movie go batshyt insane like that and I loved it.

8.5/10

Bone Tomahawk was really good and I did the same thing as you...kept skipping past it for a while with the urge to watch it but never pulling the trigger.

I thought The Ritual was a bit uneven and tried to smoosh a bit too many different horror genres together but overall I liked it a lot.
I hated the design of the creature though. Everything about the look of it irked the hell out of me.

Did a rewatch of all The paranormal activity films.

I watched 1 a night, after a couple drinks and would watch them alone at night with the lights off and my surround sound headphones. Which is my preferred horror film method. And most importantly no phone or tablets allowed, to let myself immerse.

I’d only seen each film once.

Gotta say those first 3 hold up and are great. They’re unverving. The sound design is excellent and I’m always finding myself searching through the frame for any movement. They’re a testament that you don’t need budget for effective horror just creativity. But they should have ended at 3.

4,the marked ones and 5 are bad. They feel really forced and stretched. And the final one is just crap. Overly explained and showing the ghost just ruins it.

3 is my favorite. It’s not as slow paced as the first 2 and has got so many memorable scenes and the fan camera was brilliant. 3 gave just enough story/lore for me to have been satisfied with it ending there.

Gotta say I miss having a yearly traditional horror franchise for October like this and saw gave me.

I am racking my brain right now to try and remember anything about the last Paranormal Activity movie and I am coming up with nothing. I do remember going to the movies to see it but I can't remember a single thing about the movie right now. I don't think I have ever totally forgotten an entire movie before.

Which is funny because that film contains the most answers :lolbron:

Honestly wish it was never made.

Anybody remember Alien Abduction:Incident In Lake County?

It came out a year before Blair witch project. It was broadcast on tv with not much intro or explanation and was found footage style and I remember a lot of people thinking it was real as again, this was even before Blair witch and found footage wasn’t really a thing.

I was a younging and that film terrified me. The ending shot of the guy panicked holding a camera and running into a room and then an alien is hiding behind the door in the dark and closes it and then walks up and takes the camera then it ends was seared into my brain.

We need more alien horror films. Fire in the sky types

I love 1 and 3. 2 is fine but it just feels off. Series gets a bad rap because of how it ended but seeing 1 in a theater on opening weekend is still one of the best things I’ve ever done

Had some time this weekend and saw the hype for the Endless so I did some horror watching this weekend, some hot takes,

The Resolution:
I jumped on this one of heads talking about it having loose connections to the Endless. I'm glad I did too. It's a bit slow to get to the main plot concept that turns everything on its head, but there's enough mystery to keep you watching to that point. You really are better off going in with no clue and just being patient as everything unfolds. I really enjoyed it.

The Endless:
I'm not sure I'd have enjoyed this as much without watching the Resolution first. The two movies play off each other really well to build around a pretty dope concept. This one had a bigger budget and they went all out toward a more Lovercraftian direction that I didn't get with the Resolution though. There are some really dope wtf moments and plays with time too. I get how heads are disappointed at the conclusion though. I want to explore this universe more deeply and get some more answers myself, even though the whole Lovecraft thing is about the truth being too much.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe:
A compliment I never give a horror movie, but this director really did well setting up jump scares. It wasn't an abused tactic either so the couple of times that were used on jump scares weren't bad and actually had a chance to catch you off guard. This kinda feels like the old Japanese vengeful ghost concept in a morgue instead of a haunted house tbh. There are a lot of questions that don't get very substantial answers. There's enough thread to make theories on this plus the cast and crew seemed to handle this with care, so I kinda wanna look at if there was more planned for it that got cut. This joint could have a sequel flesh out things some more. Anyway, it's a twist on the revenge ghost prospect with what appears to be more going on underneath but could just have been lazy writing. A more fleshed out backstory woulda been nice, but worth a check if you're bored and not looking for anything special.

I probably did see it, but I was young then too, so I don't remember it, the title sounds familiar- my father let me watch horror/thriller movies with him since I was little (lol..idk why he allowed that, mature for my age, I guess.. ). I've been a fan since then. Last alien abduction type movie that I watched was Extraterrestrial, The Fourth Kind, and some doc. type movie called Missing411 - which was about how people mysteriously vanish or go missing from National Parks (ie. Yellowstone, etc.) without a trace. The alien horror is a good subgenre.. agreed.
