city council is fighting her. Not as bad as Washington but they aren’t lock step like Rahm/Daley. You got fags like Lopez openly shytting on her. And these downtown cacs aren’t gonna put up with these shootings and looting. Even Daley was shook of them. Who are her allies now? Black folks hate her. The regular cops/ethnic cops hate here. She was chasing a bunch of fags in speedos off the lake front this weekend so that community probably hates her. She’s done
The council makes noise but at the end she usually ends up getting her way. You’re right about guys like Lopez - he’s obviously gunning for her and will be running for mayor hoping to get white ethnic voters on his side but at the same time you gotta remember he’s a Daley/Burke creation. That isn’t getting any attention bc it’s some years out from election season and bc his profile isn’t big enough to justify the media lens (yet) but if the race is between Lightfoot and someone that can be painted as part of the machine, the machine will lose again.
One thing ppl underestimate is the extent to which the low turnout in Chicago elections gives local aldermen power when it comes time to vote. A LOT of shyt goes under the radar bc it’s just too granular for ppl outside the specific ward/neighborhood to care about. For all of the noise that ppl in these areas might make, Lori is actually in good shape with many of the white aldermen in the north/northwest side. She does this by letting them have their priorities on issues that never make it to the headlines (for instance allowing them to take over the Special Service Committees in their areas). Or not tearing down the Columbus statue, fighting the “defunding police” movement, not fighting the Garfield Park police academy, raising taxes to fund the fire/police pensions and allowing crazy overtime for cops. The unwritten agreement is that they are allowed to criticize her publicly but that when it comes to voting they fall in line. And in a cpl years, chances are that her strongest challenger will actually come from her left. The progressives are much more organized. They have CTU and a few other unions in their camp. And there is zero chance that the white aldermen will tell their people to support a more liberal/progressive candidate over lightfoot. THe one thing white voters are good at is getting on code, holding their noses and voting accordingly.
Finally, I don't know I'd agree that "Black folks hate her." Black voters in Chicago are not a monolith and more importantly it only matters if the ppl who hate a politician actually vote. I'd bet any amount of money that if you ask Black voters who live in Beverly, Chatham and other more "middle class" enclaves that she is still very popular. This issue (the disconnect between what political observers/activists THINK that the people support vs the reality) is something I'm interested in (thinking about starting a political blog/podcast).
Check this out. I picked the 3 wards that I think most of us would agree have been hardest hit by just about everything that's going on in the city (economically, crime, coronavirus etc) Lori got a total of 16,200 votes during the runoff from them.
24th ward N. Lawndale - 4500 votes
28th Ward (Garfield park, Austin etc) - 6000 votes
17th Ward Englewood/gresham/marquette park - 5,700 votes
Compare that to
6th ward (chatham, park manor, englewood) - 9200 (97% black)
7th ward (south shore) 7100 (92% black)
8th (grand crossing) - 9300 (97% black)
The numbers in woodlawn, hyde park and bronzeville are just as large. I didn't include them only bc those areas are 25% white so some of those numbers may be skewed. These ppl are not out there voicing support for looters. And when it comes time to vote they'll back her again.
