Drinkhaus was the shyt...I fukked with the vibe there because it was late 20s and 30 something's but you could carry a conversation with the people in there. They always started fighting inside though...I think there was also a shooting one night too. Not sure if that's what led to them shutting down.
I fukk with Persona now and occasionally Refuge. Crowd is a lil too old for me though. Like 40 plus it feels like.
I could never do Drinkhaus because, it was far enough outside the loop where instead of being a chill after work happy hour spot, it became a place for randoms to just come and it started becoming a mess. Too many 20 somethings who couldn't hold their liquor getting into it with each other at 6 pm for me.
My personal top 10 Downtown-ish after work happy hour spots. (no particular order)
Ceres - Been discussed, if you work in the financial district you know. Go with a friend or make one there, do some serious drinking and chat.
Persona - Also in financial district, prob the only place in the loop that will have an all black crowd. Drunk PAWGS at cactus next door if you need em.
Bar Louie / Lalos (UIC) - Of the two I prefer Bar Louie's actual happy hour food and drinks, but hoards of women go drink margaritas next door. Bar louie will either be empty or crazy packed depending on the day.
Mccormick and Schmick - Best happy hour burger, affordable specials can sit outside across from the river drink and people watch while feeling fancy.
Carnivale - Best tasting drinks and food for the money, always mid to upscale clientele, good decor, not loud, great for conversation too.
Mercadito - Again mid to upscale. Good food that costs too much, good drinks that cost too much. They have lots of fun food/drink events.
Howl at the Moon - Sing along piano bar, incredible for outings with mixed groups of co workers, if you reserve your happy hour ahead of time you get two $1.50 drink tix, then reg $4 drinks afterwards and snacks. Lots of drunk 30ish whites, and a mix of everybody else including tourists.
Del Toro - Kind of a stretch as it's a lil past University village, midscale mexican, incredible drink menu, happy hour days vary, check their website. Dope patio, worth the uber..
Commons (The Virgin Hotel) - The virgin hotel has 2 bars, Commons is on 2nd floor, chill affordable happy hour. Good for business/conversation.
Brando's Speakeasy - Great cheap drinks, small and crowded most of the time. Good first stop..
